1) It's based on the original Instinct, which is getting long in the tooth. Tough as nails, has all the basics and good battery life, but at the end of the day…it's still 4 year old tech. Not saying it's not a decent deal, just know that it won't have all the features of the Instinct 2 and that software support for it may trail off a lot sooner than buying a newer model.

2) The "e-sports" branding was a horrible mismatch with a GPS watch that was originally targeted at hikers, backpackers and hunters. Just never caught on.

One thing I was not planning to do today was by a smartwatch.

I just bought a smartwatch.

Same as the regular instinct. The gaming eSports branding did not appeal to that market. The color is not bad. I love the instinct linen . Only this better would be the solar variant.

So there is an instinct 2 and this is leftover from the instinct. So if you like the idea of a long lasting gps and heart rate monitoring fitness watch, this is it. Not flashy, but functional. I love mine for outdoor recreation like hiking and hunting. I rarely use it for notifications or changing music. It's nice to see that a person is calling and more.

2 questions. I don't really ever play video games but this watch is fine for me anyways. Like I'm not losing any features and I can afford it.

I spend like 8+ hours a day outside in full sun. If I'm out enough can it keep a solar watch charged indefinitely?

The most important feature missing in this watch is the live tracking, in case something happens to you out in a trail the live track can help your family member or EMS locate you, wanted to get this watch for a long time, regret not getting the solar edition on Amazon prime day or from Costco when they dropped to $200. Decisions decisions this for $99 or wait for the solar to drop to $199 again and I think the solar has the updated sensor so has SPO2/V02 Max

Its not integrated into the watch but the garmin phone app does live tracking. My wife has a venu sq and she uses it on her morning rides.
the esports edition is basically the normal instinct but they wanted to leverage the HRM broadcasting for streamers. It seemed half-assed and didn't gain traction.

I bought the non esports edition for ~200 a while back and I'm pretty happy with it. Battery is still great on mine, I dont know about 14 days but I just throw it on the charger every once in a while. I'm not a tri athlete but I use it daily for runs/bikes/gainz. My big complaints are no NFC/garmin pay and it's really thick on the wrist. Your partner may notice during seggsy time.
I agree that the solar and instinct ii are better but there will always be newer and shiner things. When the time comes IDK if i'll upgrade to the instinct II or the forerunner 255

Depends on the watch, how you use it and where you live (northern latitudes get less sunlight in the winter months and more cloudy days). One of the reasons they're blowing these out is that the Instinct 2 Solar will run indefinitely with enough sunlight. No charging required. Yeah, there were incremental upgrades with features and sensors but that's the value proposition for the Instinct 2 Solar - a watch that rarely if ever needs charging. Why spend $300 on a watch when you can get one that does everything that one does and more but never needs charging for $100 more?

I think this is a great watch and a great deal even for a non-gamers. I want to upgrade from an old Foreunner that I love. I'm just not sure I like the look of the watch. Big Plasticly looking watch.

In theory these batteries should last 500-1000 charge cycles or at least five years. But a battery that has been sitting around for four years, in who knows what conditions, could have easily already lost 25% of its capacity and possibly more depending on how it has been stored.
I had a Fenix 3HR which was used for 6 years before replacing with a Fenix 7x SS, and only because of newer features that I wanted. I sold the 3 HR for about $100 earlier this year.

Great watch - lasts 16+ hours with GPS on if you turn off HR and bluetooth. Took me to Whitney and a few other 20+ mile hikes
And easily lasts *well over* a week with the GPS off.

Adding to my comment above, I bought this simply because it seems like a good activity tracking watch with some advanced features. I'm not a gamer, so I won't be using that mode. I'm utilitarian about these things... fits a need/want, has good battery life, solid reviews, and it seems the price can't be beat for something comparable.

Also, it looks nicer in the video reviews I watched than in the stock photos. The videos suggest a rounder, slightly more refined/classic styling than what I see in the pics, but hard to tell. I'm not expecting any style awards out of this, but I'm hoping to be pleasantly surprised.

I live in New Orleans so sunlight isn't a problem. I'm a gardener and also just spend a lot of time outside in my free time. I'm a big bike rider. I have a Lezyne bike computer which I wish would sync with Garmin products. Being able to sync the more accurate bike computers data with the health data of the watch would be ideal.

I bought this from Best Buy last holiday for ~$140 if I recall during one of the "Daily Deals". Absolutely love it - it has that Casio G-Watch look and I only need to charge it once a week. My new Galaxy Watch 4 that I bought new just sits at home because I'm sick of it going dead by late evening hour (e.g. doesn't even last a day).
