But when I did an in-store purchasing today, tax was calculated on (price - TIV_promo). According to the representative, this is because TIV_normal is processes as a GC and it has to be applied after the checkout, so the tax is charged on that part. Don't know if this is all true to CA or other states.

- I've done in-store trade-ins a few times at Best Buy. They only do a cursory look at the phone, to make sure it matches the color and condition. They don't care if it is carrier locked or is still being financed. -RonaldM

1. Go to the "Order Details" page for your order on bestbuy.com. This page likely says "Shipping Kit on its way" for the trade in status.
2. Open Developer Console in Chrome. Navigate to the "Networks" tab and reload the page.
3. Search for "trade" in the search box.
4. You should see 3 results - the third begins with "2002..." for me. Click on this one.
5. Click on "tradeInStatusInfo" -> "fulfillment" -> "tracking".
You will see the tracking number of the return shipping UPS label. You should also see a "isBoxShipped" field that likely reflects if your trade-in kit has shipped yet.

So say if your total trade in value for an iPhone 11 is $490 ($190 actual + $300 promotion), the $300 will be deducted from the price of the Pixel 7, which will lower the taxes on it. After that, the $190 will be applied as a regular Best Buy gift card, so that amount will not reduce taxes.
If you return the Pixel 7, you end up getting the $190 gift card back, but you lose the $300 promotion as it was applied to the price of the phone as a coupon.
So the key is that coupons usually reduce taxes as they are applied pre tax, but gift cards don't as they are cash equivalent and are applied post tax.
ps: This is jut a logical analysis. I'm not 100% certain what will actually end up happening.

Has anyone been able to get the $100 giftcard for any of the non-obsidian Pixel 7s? Lemongrass seems to be unavailable and the white one doesn't have the giftcard as an option.
Note, the trade-in value is broken down into a $230 value of px6 + $250 promotional trade-in. I got the physical gift card right then.
