Question for the experts, what's the appeal of owning digital movies? Do we plan to rewatch the same movie over and over? I understand the point of owning a physical disc as a collectible, but storing a digital movie to watch seems to me like just paying for a streaming sub to watch.

Not all films are on all streaming services or their VOD so you have to rent to watch. I personally always try to buy a physical disc that also has a digital copy. JL Snyder Cut is only available on HBO Max's service or VOD. The disc also does not have a digital copy.

Depends on you. Discs can go bad and take up space, especially on large collections. Buddy of mine has something like 4 or 5,000 movies on disc and it takes up a large chunk of his living room and part of his kitchen. Whether buying or acquiring via alternative means 🏴 ☠️, it means you can watch it on your schedule, whenever and wherever. If you only watch something once and never again, and don't ever care to watch a specific movie or show, streaming may be a better choice.
Personally, I transferred my budget for going to the movie theater, over to digital movie years ago. Renting is nearly as much as buying, especially on sale, so why not buy? I also figured that at some point, content licences for places like Netflix would expire, and not come back as content owners started looking to copy netflix and then what? (This was before netflix started making their own content).
Now there are a bunch of streaming services, and it costs more than premium cable ever did to have them all. My purchased content is one and done, and I can watch it indefinitely (so far).

Hard to insert that disc into the side of your iPad when you're on an airplane.
