I bet half the people complaining about soldered RAM don't even know how to change the RAM in a computer. 🙄

Lenovo sure makes some odd laptops. Decent CPU. Good ram. But soldered. No touch screen and thunderbolt. I saw an other one with strong cpu and gpu. But low storage and ram. Both soldered. Why do they make desirable machines. But make sure it has unfixable flaws.

the hinges
Which manufacturers don't have hinge problems? My 5 year old Dell Inspiron has hinge issues too.

I purchased this exact laptop from Staples about a month ago for this same price. In fact, I'm using it to type this.

I've been thrilled with it so far. It's fast, has enough RAM to run everything I've needed (even running an Ubuntu 22 virtual machine). The aluminum unibody makes it feel more premium than the price suggests. It's fairly light, battery life is good, and the screen is bright when turned up.

There are two downsides I've found for my use-case: 1) the cooling fan whines a bit and 2) the HDMI port is only 1.4b (maximum resolution 4k30).

Also, the Staples specifications indicate there is a fingerprint reader. There is not on this specific model.

To work around the HDMI resolution issue, I have coupled the laptop with a Lenovo Mini Docking Station. The HDMI output from that supports 4k60.

I have also done some light gaming on the laptop. I was surprised how well it ran older games, like Mirror's Edge Catalyst, beautifully on mid-level settings. For games, I often cycle power modes (Fn+q) to force high-performance when on battery.

I would not hesitate to buy another one, especially for the price.

Does this support hyperthreading? Sorry if is a noob question
Yes. The i7-1255U has 2 Performance cores and 8 Efficient cores. Each performance core supports Hyper-Threading. This combination makes for a total of 12 threads (4P + 8E).

My HP pavilion DV6 has perfect hinges and still runs well enough.
How do the Intel graphics compare with 3060?

Yeah, I was targeting at 8GB, but maybe 16 GB ram could be a better choice nowadays.
I have found that additional RAM and an SSD make a machine far more useful than a fast CPU. It doesn't take clock cycles to have two dozen Chrome tabs open - it takes RAM.

There really is no comparison. An RTX 3060 is leaps and bounds better than the 96EU on-chip graphics in this i7-1255U. I don't believe any of the Intel integrated GPUs can compete with that level of discreet GPU.

I just bought an IdeaPad 3 during the Amazon Prime sale, and yeah, 8GB fixed RAM and I can add another 8GB. That's plenty for my purposes - in 2022. I know my typical usage is 7GB, so 16GB should be good for the 3 years I typically get from a laptop. Bought it because Dell customer service has gone from bad to worse, my current HP is a little bit of a lemon (odd things that drive me nuts no matter what I try with settings and stuff). I narrowed it down to an Asus Vivobook or a Lenovo IdeaPad, and waited for the sales.

Why does ram get soldered anyways?
In this instance the BoM (Bill of Materials). It's cheaper for manufacturers to solder the RAM packages onboard rather than using SODIMM slots and physical SODIMMs. Most people will never bother upgrading their computers so manufacturers have started leaving the option out. Some laptops incorporate a hybrid approach. They'll have one memory package soldered onboard and a SODIMM slot free for upgraded down the line. It's a good compromise but it's not as prevalent either.

Cellphones already come with 12GB ram today. What makes you think 2 yrs from now 16GB is enough for PC?
