Great to see 12th Gen laptops hitting this price level. However, this has a 220nits 1080P TN panel.
The 8GB 3200 MHz RAM is soldered, but there is an empty SODIIMM slot for upgrade.

Just unboxed this thing and set it up. Pretty much everything I expected was confirmed, but it was slightly better than expected. It's fast and light, and the keyboard and the touchpad are very good quality (esp for the price). As reported by others and reviews, the screen isn't great. Contrast is awful and it's not super vivid. And colors are slightly off, even after calibrating color a bit. But: the anti-glare is very effective, and it is bright enough to use outdoors or in bright areas. If you want to watch movies or do any video/photo editing as a primary function, you might not be satisfied with this screen. But for a general productivity machine that's pretty fast, very portable, and near bargain-basement pricing, it definitely meets my needs. Not saying I wouldn't pay $50 more for a significant upgrade in color & contrast, but for $270, it's hard to complain too much. I've never gotten this much for this little on a regular sale for a new laptop.

Update: I'm finding it difficult to open up the bottom to access the rumored extra DIMM slot. It seems harder than usual to open up, I'm concerned that it may not be upgradable. Can anyone confirm if this laptop does indeed have an extra memory slot that is accessible without damaging the device? I'm afraid to break it.

Can you return open laptops back to target without any sort of restocking fee? I'm tempted to get one myself to see how bad the screen is. Is it usable for media consumption? I intend to use it mostly for playing old games and streaming services.

Wasn't really aware of their return policies, I assumed to them to be "on par wit elsewhere". Seems that's not the case. Ouchie, thank you for mentioning that. I may keep it either way (I really do like the keyboard/touchpad and overall quality) the screen is a bit rough but it may grow on me (keeping it at around 60% brightness). Perhaps I'm being too harsh on the black but it feels like a downgrade from my 3yr older Lenovo.

For media consumption I think it'd be fantastic and well worth it and I imagine will play classic games fairly decently.
Went ahead and threw some oldies on it to test out, here's the results
  • Ziggurat (Very High) ran fine
  • Super Meat Boy ran fine
  • Life is strange struggled on anything other than low, and crashed once past main screen.
  • Portal 2 (High) ran fine
  • Outlast (Very Low) ran fine (and still looked decent lol)
If you have any specific games you're interested in testing out lmk and I'll see if I can bench em.

I don't see any mention of a restocking fee for opened electronics / laptops EXCEPT mobile phones ($35 restocking fee where allowed be law). There is an extended return period during the Holiday season.

My understanding is the electronics inside that connects to panel is different, it will not work because the panel uses two different technology.

However there are models that could be interchanged with TN and IPS compatibility just not sure if this laptop is one of them.

In terms of how easy? it isn't to most, frame is usually glued on or along sides of screen along the way you might damage any electrical board or cable ribbon underneath it. Wait until someone does open up video or with clear pictures of the laptop anatomy.

I bought this Asus laptop from BB last week with a deal as open box for $445. https://www.bestbuy.com/site/asus...c=pdpShare
It has a better cpu of Ryzen 7 5700u but the ram is 8GB non-upgradable.
I am not familiar with benchmark but if I understood it correctly this one even has higher single thread rating than the Ryzen 7 5700u.
So, this one is $145 less with double ram (after buy 8GB ram someone posted in this thread for $30).
Does it make sense to return the Asus and keep this one especially I can hold and see if better deals come later since Target started the extended return period?
P.S. The screen of the Asus is also dull and I did not like it so I do not think it will be much better than this one.
Any comments from the experts? Thank you!

I think it comes down to your intended use/needs. You have a bigger screen, slightly better processor, definitely better GPU, all for roughly $145 more. Not bad.
If you don't care about gaming at all, and 14" isn't a deal breaker for you, then I'd go with with the Lenovo simply to save the extra money.

For my needs (Photoshop, Visual Studio 2022, Parsec, Teams, and random Youtube n browsing) it's carrying the load perfectly fine.

The keyboard, trackpad, and shell all feel "quality", the display is garbage but it's acceptable/dealable and it's growing on me the more I use it. If the keyboard or trackpad weren't as nice as they are it would have already gone back though, without a moments thought.

I also think I have a certain bias towards the brand (I have a Thinkpad T from 20 years ago that still boots lol, I've been using an Ideapad 3 81WA for leisure for years, and use a ThinkPad E15 for work) -- The screen difference between the E15 and this model is DRASTIC (see below).

Yes you can angle it a bit better, and sure it's not the absolute worst screen. But if your current laptops displays blacks are actually black... Keep it Stick Out Tongue

The Asus have not arrived yet but I saw it at BB after purchasing it.
It is not for gaming at all. I will mainly use it for MS office suite, web-browsing, light coding and similar things.

It was, yes! For the price I figured I could look past a lot... But the touchpad is awful, leads to accidental zooming constantly, and just overall feels bad moving/clicking (loud clicking to boot) and I couldn't get past the zooming accidentally anytime I'm scrolling.

Ultimately for this laptop (the Lenovo in this post) I believe after a few more hours of using it now the display is just too bad and I'll be returning it as well. It actively makes me not want to keep looking at it. The laptop in every other aspect is fantastic, but the display is too rough.

Will update if Target gives any issues with returning to solidify others concerns.
