Benchmade is well-respected and you do pay a bit for the name, but it earns that with excellent materials, service, technology, and workmanship (quality control being their main issue). IMO it's among the best (for the money) along with Boker, Emerson, and Zero Tolerance. The Griptilian line is well-established (released in 2001) and shines at almost everything. The Axis locks are superb and it's fast, light and smooth; and there's a lot of choice in materials for the blade and the scales.

With many blade steels it's also important who produced it and how it's been treated — Benchmade consistently excels there too. The CPM-20CV in this offers great edge retention and corrosion resistance for the money, while being a bit less tough and harder to sharpen than, e.g., S35VN. As for the handles/scales, I'm not 100% sure what exactly these are, but when you buy Benchmade you can trust it's going to be more than half decent. You can upgrade them later if you want anyway.

Kinda like saying if you're buying $200k cars you should learn take care of them yourself. You're not wrong, it's just not helpful and a bit out of touch.

Something that seems to be overlooked in a lot of these 'cost' discussions is the cost of labor. If I build a similar knife in China and pay my worker 30 cents an hour, it's going to be a lot less expensive to produce the end product than paying Joe in Illinois $25 per hour for his expertise. Considering the fact I'll sell more of the cheaper Chinese variant, I have economy of scale, whereas I may not have the same scale for the higher priced US made unit. Do any type of manufacturing cost analysis and you'll see how much these factors drive the cost.

Most people don't know the difference between an Ikea buffet and a similar looking piece made in North Carolina by a master carpenter who hand-cut, fit all the joinery or the time/$ that goes into building that piece. For you, looking like a buffet is all that really matters; it serves a function and fills a space. For the rest, they may appreciate the craftsmanship and/or supporting local businesses or whatever the case may be. Different strokes for different folks and all that...

Does anyone have experience with Benchmade warranty? I just boxed up my old ATS-34 because the blade is off now and the liner lock is sticking. Just wanted to know what to expect. I am not sure if they have parts any more for that one.

How does this compare to the Benchmade Bugout that I bought here a few years ago? I carry it everyday and it's a great knife. It hasn't been sharpened yet and I don't necessarily feel an immediate need. If and when they need arises I will likely mail it to benchmade for sharpening.
It's about twice as heavy. I love how my bugout is almost imperceptible in even the lightest shorts pockets. If weight's not an issue this is probably a better all around knife.

This isn't a sports car or iPhone.
It's a knife.
Presumably someone who gets this will have use for it.

However, what I find almost comical is there are people willing to spend this kind of money on a knife who don't have enough experience with knives to sharpen it themselves. Pathetic as can be.
LOL. "Stop taking advantage of free, expert services and engage in my hobby so that I can feel superior!"

I own a set of Japanese whetstones and I can put a decent edge on a knife. I doubt I can beat the professionals at Benchmade. I also own a ton of tools and wrench on my own vehicles, but I don't go around telling other people that they need to learn my hobby, either. I got over that attitude around college when I realized it's just a garbage behavior that makes one look foolish and baselessly arrogant.

Next time someone is looking at your knife and takes note of the fine edge, that's your opportunity to start a conversation about your sharpening hobby. Not in an online discussion of a slick deal, part of which is apparently *free* sharpening.

What makes this knife worth $110? I see that it's made in the US, which is nice, but otherwise I'm a bit confused.
You're probably just easily confused, don't sweat it too much

I own quite a few Benchmade knives but have never had them sharpened them. I don't trust the USPS UPS or Fedex to get them back to me. Too much sentimental value may be in them. My dad taught me to sharpen a knife when I got my first Uncle Henry for my birthday but I'm so old I can't remember age probably 8 to 10. Whittling fishing and hunting required a good sharp knife. I have got no problem with others taking advantage of their sharpening service but for me having got things lost in the mail its no for me.

Just bought a knife off SD yesterday that looks exactly like this for like 8 doll hairs
Sure but it won't feel anything like this one. The grip is just simply smooth and solid. Mine is several years old and looks like new.

People pay for what they perceive as value on things. Some people get snobbish about brands and features just like any other hobby/interest.

People will wax eloquant about steel quality and workmanship and reliability and on and on and on about the stuff. I personally edc a bunch of different kershaw folders that are always at least 1/3 the price of Benchmade and I have zero issues with them.
I daily carry my Kershaw folders, but I also have a couple Benchmades. I dont carry them every day only because I worry about losing them doing mundane tasks. If I'm doing something where I anticipate needing a blade, I grab my Benchmade, they just feel better and operate smoother than any of the 6-7 Kershaws I have.

Not always, just when they're relatively expensive for no apparent reason. I picked up a nice little Cold Steel EDC knife the other day for $13 (AUS-8a, made in Taiwan) and I don't recall anyone asking what made it worth $13.

What's wrong with it? I was under the impression that it was decent, but I'm no expert.

I own a Benchmade Bugout AXIS Aluminum I paid a little less than 200 for a year ago. Why would someone buy this? It looks cool, it's super sharp and almost never seems to go dull, I carry it if I can't take my gun, it's great at opening boxes, it has a great brand and warranty, it's made in the US, and I can have it sharpened if ever needed. I have owned 20 and 40 dollar knives and this one blows them away. Could I go to the kitchen and use a steak knife to open my packages or carry it around also? Yes. If you have a candy money budget for a knife, then buy something else.
