These ssds are measured in mm. 2280 is standard which is a connector that is 22mm wide and 80mm long. The steamdeck uses 2230 which is significantly shorter. They have to fit all that storage in a smaller space, and also because it's a less widely used size, less are produced at this size which also make them more expensive.

Prices have come down a little so now you can get a 1tb for about this price ordering from eBay and having it ship from China or HK, but you're likely better off with the 6year inland warranty if you're lucky enough to live near a microcenter

I bought the 512 deck specifically to be able to upgrade the SSD later on. However, I've actually found that 95% of my games run perfectly fine from my one terabyte micro SD card.

I timed a half dozen of the larger apps, and launch-to-in-game times were only 2-3 seconds difference for most of the games.

There are only a couple multiplayer games where two to three seconds makes any difference at all, so I just keep those on the deck's internal 512 GB ssd.

After seeing it real world, I honestly don't think anyone actually needs to upgrade the SSD.

Does the steam deck require a special type of SSD besides the normal ones we always see on sale?

You can upgrade the 64gb Steam Deck with this as well. Or any model for that matter

Agreed. I really don't see any noticeable difference either.

This can also prove handy as secondary storage for those desktop or mobile systems for which you don't require wireless support (but which came equipped with a wireless interface while possibly lacking a primary or secondary M.2 dedicated to storage).

Good luck!
