Googles servers have been buggy lately. 10 seconds to turn on a light. Randomly doing things without me saying anything. Mini in the other room responding. Used to work great. I guess Google, as usual, did not scale.
My understanding is the culture at Google puts a huge emphasis on launching a product, and from there the engineers/devs move up (or on) to other departments. Maintenance isn't sexy. Same reason Stadia died.
I remember the days when they were giving these away for free...

This site has become a social site talking about bad points of the product and personal experiences instead of the legitimacy of the deal. Sure reviews are helpful but what happened to feedback on solely the deal? "Ide wait till black friday these come down to blah blah".. smh
Huh? There's plenty of discussion like that. I've been around here for well over a decade and aside from the shilled product posts (which admittedly keep the SD lights on) and the occasional weirdos who want to get super political, this site has been invaluable and has miraculously stayed on topic in the hot deals subforum.

Oh and people aren't saying "Wait til BF" on this because it's $20 and you'd probably be saving $5-10 waiting. For someone who needs one of these for whatever reason, is $5 worth waiting? Probably not.

You don't consider people's experiences with a product useful information when shopping? Knowing how good or bad a product is CERTAINLY helps people decide whether something is a good deal or not.

The biggest different bt Google and Alexa is when a child ask "what is virgin?".

I love the Google Assistant, but these Nest Mini (2nd Generation) are absolutely awful. I have to restart mine every few days. They just stop responding... I purchased a TP Link smart plug. I'm going to try doing a power reset on the Nest Mini 2nd Gen every morning. This idea of using a smart plug was given to me by a friend who had to do the same thing for his Nest Mini 2nd Generation.

Also, Google pushed a new update to the Nest Mini 2nd Gen about 2 weeks ago and its significantly slower to respond now. It causes all sorts of issues with multiple Google Home devices. For example, if I try to set a timer, the Google Home will set the timer first because the Nest Mini is slow, then the Nest Mini will set the timer, but at this point the Google home is listening for a response and it hears the Nest Mini respond so now the Google Home will set a second timer. This happens back and forth between my Google Nest Mini and Google Home. I had 4 one minute timers set on each device this morning before the Nest Mini took an even longer to respond and broke the cycle.

Google Assistant is awesome. Google Nest Mini 2nd Generation is absolute garbage and Google should give everyone who owns a Nest Mini 2nd Generation a free replacement when they create a new one.

Product quality is and always should be inherent to legitimacy of a "deal".

This is fundamental. This site has always been about this.

I see this mainly applying to the recent Pixel deals... I think it's correlwted to how often people are exposed to deals on a particular product

The more frequent the deals, the more jaded people get, and the less the posts become about the deal, and more about the product itself irrespective of the posted deal itself.

Look at PS5, nvidia 3xxx, lenovo Legion laptops, and other repetitive deals over the past 12 months. for reference.

May as well add some random Tesla threads to this too, lol.

What brand is the light?

You do realize all of the APIs for third party devices aren't hosted by Google's servers, right? This is true regardless of what ecosystem you use, unless your devices are interfaced locally.

The best way to improve the speed is get HomeAssistant or a Hubitat and host all your devices locally.

If that's too complicated, stick with devices that have US based servers.

That no-name plug off Amazon is probably pinging a server overseas, which adds to the round trip time of the response.

I don't play songs thru Google, but I DO Play them thru Alexa - the past several days, Alexa "can't find" my song library anymore. "Occasionally" Alexa says it's found and is shuffling my music, but then NOTHING Plays! So it's not just Google that's messes up lately, unfortunately. But I also have the problem of Google taking "forever" to respond when I ask a question, or I tell it to turn on a tv or something. Irritating to say the least.
Perhaps you're dealing with a failing power supply or your voice profile needs to be recalibrated.

A theory is the original power supplies suck and don't provide the board with enough power to function reliably.

Ever since I upgraded the power supplies on my units, they've started behaving better.

The mini is like every other Google product. Starts out as a good product and over time gets worse. See pixel phones, nest products, Google apps as references.
