I'm not sure where all of the negativity and insulting around EDCing a fixed blade is coming from. EDC is about carrying and using tools that are helpful to you in your everyday life. And some of us spend some of our days in the remote woods actually doing things, and just carry the same knife at all times. A fixed blade is much tougher and stronger, since it does not have the folders' key point of failure right in the middle, and is a more capable tool overall. This of course is not necessary for everyone, but disparaging it is like saying "I've only ever needed a light ball peen hammer in my sheltered life, so anyone who keeps a framing hammer in their tool box must have a small penis."

Anyway, as someone that owns and uses both Ontario RATs and Esees, I will say that the Esees are definitely nicer, and have a better warranty, so are better if you have the money. The sheaths in particular are much better. But if money is an issue, Ontario RATs are still very capable and have similar or even identical designs. And the designs are indeed great.
I am surprised this knife thread isn't flooded with the usual questions about why is this knife so expensive etc.. etc..

I am just mad at how many knives SD has made me buy though, I do feel like a real man with an EDC Big Grin

This is an excellent knife, even at the normal price! You can beat the crap out of it.

Great deal. Looks like the serrated is back to $71.50. Plain is still available for $50.

Can any experienced EDC users give me some advice?

The hubs has an Esse 3, 4 and 6.

Is this one remarkably different? I'm looking to get him something as a stocking stuffer, but know next to nothing about EDC other than stick to USA.

I believe this is nearly identical to the ESEE 3. The sheath system is different on the RAT but the blade and handle shape are nearly identical.

This is NOT a good EDC (unless you live in the mountains or woods). This is a fixed-blade knife that would require him to wear it on his belt. You need to buy him a good FOLDING pocket knife for EDC.

+1… perhaps the Benchmade griptilin deal posted recently is a better option. I scooped one up and plan to change out the scales later down the line as I don't love the red

Not sure if anyone saw it, but the RAT 7 is $70 which is also a pretty solid deal.

It's a bit more, but check out the Benchmade Griptilian that's posted. I'm an ESEE fan. For folding/pocket knives, Hogue Ritter and The Griptilian are hard to beat for folks that get use from the ESEEs you mentioned.

Depend on the local knife carrying law, for example, we can't carry any blade longer than 4 inches in NYC. Any blade longer than that can only stay in my house unfortunately.

It's 7.9' length. Everyone understands it'll be expensive.
