Looks like the 1L bottle is plastic. Wish it were glass.

They have a glass one, the Aqua I think the name is, on Amazon for $100. Only has one co2 and no flavors.

Recent Sodastream models are designed to rip thru CO2. The older models required you to screw on/off the bottle but the newer ones are push on/off. The end result is that the CO2 leaks more on the new models when carbonating the bottles so you end up having to refill more often. There are much more cost effective ways to carbonate drinks than this. Sodastream are in the business of selling CO2 with an extreme markup.

Can you give a few pointers? Interested in getting started and going through the videos on youtube now. Are you suggesting avoiding all sodastreams, or just the one's with the new quick connect/pink bottles? Was planning to get an entry level, get the adapter and pop to my homebrew and get a 5lb bottle but sounds like you're saying not to do that with any of the new models - are old ones still one sale?

The quick-connect relates to the gas bottles, I was talking about the drinks bottles. I don't think it matters which type of gas connector you end up with but I believe all the new models have quick connections on both the gas and the drinks bottles.

For my setup I use an older Sodastream unit with all screw-on connectors. I use it with a 5lb CO2 tank [amazon.com] and this hose [amazon.com]. I get drinks-grade CO2 refills from a local welding supply company for $20 a pop that lasts me about 8 months. One thing I noticed is that the newer drinks bottles are longer/thinner than the older ones and don't fit the older units. I guess this is part of a ruse by Sodastream to force people to buy new kit and not hack their products. The problem with Sodastream as a product though is that if you use their products it's actually cheaper to just buy the soda premade.

And BTW, for flavorings I use Torani and Monin syrups that I get from a local Cash'n'Carry. Two squirts of that in a 12oz glass, top up with soda, and you're good to go and again, way cheaper than Sodastream. The only Sodastream product I actually use in their tonic water syrup for G'n'Ts.

Worth buying this since or this model canister is harder to hack?
