RYOBI Introduces the Black Oxide Drill and Drive Kit (40-Piece). This 40-Piece Drill and Drive set is a great kit for projects including wood, metal, and plastic materials. The Black Oxide bits are constructed out of high-speed steel with a black oxide finish to offer superior durability. Another key detail of these bits is the 135° split point that prevents your bit from walking and ensures drilling on contact. This kit features bits containing a TORSION ZONE that is engineered to absorb the high torque and demand that comes with the use of an impact driver for 3X longer life. This kit contains a variety of the most commonly used 1 in. and 2 in. bits, nut drivers that have excellent holding power when using hex drive fasteners and a magnetic bit holder for increased convenience. Included in this set are Woodboring Spade Bits that provide up to 1 in. wood drilling capacity for a wide array of applications. The compact case adds effortless storage and mobility. This set includes (12) black oxide drill bits, (2) woodboring spade bit, (4) bradpoint drill bits, (14) 1 in. impact driver bit, (4) 2 in. impact driver bit, (3) impact nut drivers, (1) impact magnetic bit holder, and a clear front carrying case.

I have this kit. It's garbage. Metal is super soft so the bits deform pretty quickly. The drill bits snap like nothing too. May be a good price but unfortunately the quality is not.
I have to agree with all the comments about this set, not good. And Ryobi black oxide drill bits are the absolute worst.
That being said, this Hart kit (I know, same company as Ryobi) has a much better assortment as a base set for homeowner. It has better drill bits, has some carbide bits, a really good basic assortment, and a great, easy to open case. It's available at most Walmart's.
I'm a occasional home DIYer and used this set for all the projects:
- floodlight installation
- vent cleaning
- garage rack installation
- elec outlet installation
- curtain rod installation
- ikea bookshelf setup
- outdoor string light setup by screwing into fence post
- outdoor outlet installation
- outdoor camera installation by drilling through sidings to inner side drywall
I'm not seeing any issue but definitely I'm not doing heavy duty work.
I lost some bits in the past but never worried. Just buy a new set like this.
I agree, these bits are NOT made for professional use. I use them often around my house and never had any problems.
Spade bit for quick potentially more sloppy work and hole saw if precision matters over speed.
Yeah, good point. Of course, the material you're sawing through makes a difference, too. I kind of think spade bits have a somewhat limited utility over a hole saw, like drilling into 2x or thicker wood. I would use a hole saw for plywood, OSB, sheetrock, etc. and on anything you want a cleaner hole, like you say.
I've had good luck with this Ryobi 70 piece impact driving kit. it doesn't have the drill bits but it has some other good stuff. This one is $15 and if you don't need the drill bits, I'd go for this...
Is there a benefit of using a spade drill bit over a hole saw bit? Seems like it just has to chew through more material before you get your hole.
spade bits are MUCH faster, so if you're, say, doing new construction and need to run wires through a bunch of studs, you'll be there all day with a hole saw.
but if you're working construction, you probably wouldn't be using a cheap set of ryobi bits anyway so these are kind of without a good place.
This is a great disposable set. Metals are pretty soft, drill bits tend to break with too much pressure. Bits shave and get rounded pretty quickly. For this price it's not a bad buy, but don't expect these to last.

Yeah, definitely don't want to use this on drywall. I run cables/lines before the drywall comes up and i can drill through 2 or 3 studs under a minute while the hole saw won't be able to or it will be much harder/longer.
