I mostly travel for work, occasionally for personal, and can say I've never had an issue with gate agents checking the size of carry ons. That said, I essentially never fly the "nickel and dime" carriers that tend to be REAL hawks on the matter. I use a Travelpro [amazon.com]I got years ago, and with the exception of the really small 1x2 or 2x2 CRJ's, that fits in every overhead bin I've used it on. It WILL fit in some of the smaller regional bins, but sideways and sometimes I'll get asked (even proactively) to gate check it.

i did the 100 day trial. sent it back via fedex for a refund. fedex dropped the ball (tracking number shows it stopped at a city and was never delivered), but travel pro didn't do anything about it. they kept my money.
it took MONTHS of emailing back and forth. they even at one point said "congrats, we found your unit, we will refund you soon". months later, they never sent it. i tried emailing them again, and they said "we never got your unit, so please wait until we get it".
i had to do a chargeback and finally got my money.
i wrote an honest review of the product on their website, but unsurprisingly they never published it.
Funny, because the reason I went with TravelPro is because of good reviews, specifically indicating that that's the brand flight crew use - otherwise hard to justify the premium price if it doesn't last substantially longer.
On more than one occasion, I crossed over the 18lb threshold by a couple pounds and had to check it in. Size wasn't nearly as big of a concern unless it was obvious it was too large. In my carry on, I am looking for something sub 6 lbs to maximize what I could pack.
For example, for Lufthansa:
Dimensions for carry-on baggage: max. 55 x 40 x 23 cm at 8kg. (21.7 x 15.7 x 9.1 in at 17.6 lbs)
Also ordered the Samsonite Renew 2-piece Softside Set (20" & 28") from Costco for $202.57 total. These come with 10 year warranty versus lifetime from Travelpro but figured that's more than enough.
Will compare and contrast the both of them.
