I'll just throw this out there...

The 2 bay 720+ (the deal here) is the 4 core upgrade CPU from the base model 2 bay / 2 core 220+

The 4 bay 420+ ( the other deal here) is the base 2 core CPU model, the 920+ (not on sale) would be the upgraded 4 core CPU / 4 bay equivalent.

I own the 2 bay / 4 core 720+ and wish I had bought the 4 bay unit for expansion and/or running RAID 5

With 2 bays, if you want protection, you have to use the other drive to mirror the first, so 2 / 18 TB hard drives will be 18TB (actually about 16ish TB). Once you've filled it, you're done. No expansion unless you buy one of those expansion modules.

A 4 bay (or more) NAS can take 1-4 drives, and you can expand and expand based on your needs. Unless you want redundancy or parity protection.

Running raid 5 will stripe data protection parity across all drives and you can afford to lose one, but 4 x 18TB drives will give you roughly 3 x 18 TB space (more like 3x 16TB)

So, make a decision on how you want to set up your NAS, and are you concerned about adding more drives later, or protecting your data? If it's not critical and you don't care, then either will work fine... One will fill up faster than the other.

If you're serving your whole family storage needs and hitting it a lot at once, a quad core is highly recommend, as is upgrading the RAM (basic, cheap laptop memory)

Again, I have the quad core 2 bay, and if I am copying files via SMB on my Mac, it becomes unresponsive for awhile for other duties, even on the quad core. It may be better using Windows. (Mac's have bad SMB implementation).

So... I've probably made your decision harder.

I can say the Synology OS is nice and easy and very flexible. I'll be selling my 2 bay soon because I'm maxed out already, but I'll be getting either the 920+ 4 core / 4 bay, or a bigger one.
New models may be announced tomorrow.

I grabbed a DS920+ from amazon warehouse for $311 in January. Only cosmetic damage to the packaging. Love it.

i need a backup for my existing nas, one that serves as:
(1) Room for expansion down the road
(2) as a backup to my NAS, should it one day crash - ive had the unit, but not the hd, go bad and then the only way to restore the data was to buy the same unit, which is only sold on secondary market now.

Is this a good option for that and for eventually transitioning to?

Same prices as prior popular deal Synology DiskStation DS420+ 4-Bay NAS Enclosure (slickdeals.net) "$85.68 lower (18% savings) than the next best available price from a reputable merchant with prices starting from $485.67"

Amazon [amazon.com] has it for $534 for third-party sellers
Amazon Reviews with 4.8 stars [amazon.com] for the DS 420+ $499

B&H deal is for a limited time

Runs on the dated Intel Celeron J4025. I have a QNAP runs on this. It feels pretty sluggish and CPU is always at max whenever I want to do anything. Price is good. If it works for your use cases, get it.

I have had the 420+ for almost 2 years. I bought it when Google decided to ditch/limit the free photo backup. It works great on my Android devices for that as well as my wife's Iphone. It has also been great as a Plex server, though it doesnt transcode 4k with HDR very well. I have nvidia Shield TV's for playing movies and they direct stream 4k just fine though, so not really an issue when playing locally. I havent done any RAM upgrades or SSD cache upgrades, but likely will soon.

If you have an existing Synology unit, you can move the drives and put them in a new unit in the same order and it should work. This way, if you ever have a unit fail, you don't necessarily have to buy the exact same unit.

It depends what you want to do with it, though I do recommend you max out the RAM regardless of what you plan to do with it. If you intend to use it as a storage/Plex streaming server/VPN server, this will serve you well. If you plan to try to run, I dunno, a Windows virtual machine on it, then this will get sluggish pretty quickly. This is really a storage server, not an application server, but running one or two apps on it, particularly those which are designed for it will not tax it very much.

I've generally found that Syno's DSM is lighter than QOS leading to snappier performance on identical hardware, though Syno's products are always more expensive. That said, many host-your-own streaming server services (like Plex) are dependent on Intel's QuickSync to decode/encode video, and newer Syno machines are AMD-based. But it very much depends what you're doing with it.

You can run Docker, but again it depends on how much you plan to run in it and you should always maximize the RAM. If you plan to run 1-2 services — say Plex and Calibre — that aren't too taxing, sure, this is great. If you plan to run half of Linuxserver's catalog, this is probably not for you.

Thank you.
I only need to use it as regular local NAS so that my Apple TV with Infuse app can pick up and play on the TV..
I also think about doing some camera recording storage.
