I really want it... but dunno if I need it. I rather enjoy my 24c/48t Ivy Bridge workstation so this would be a downgrade in number of cores and threads, but the speed and power efficiency could make up for it.

Then again, I don't have any DDR4 RAM so that would make the cost go up even more.

Decisions, decisions.
Nice, is this like a dual processor xeon setup? Which one is it? Are you compiling c++ ? Big Grin

edit: Have you tried a chromium build? my 4c/4t i5-2500 took like 10+ hr heh. supposedly the 12700k/13600k can do it in more like an hour.

I drove 6 hours away one day off work. I felt like a kid in a candy store. But, I was hounded by sales people left and right. The prices are really bad on most items (Amazon/Newegg much better) and they were out of stock of a lot of items I would actually buy. And the damn racing sim was broken. I left, sad and underwhelmed.

I'm a crazy movie freak and have encoded my large bluray/ultraHD collection. I went with a 13900K for that instead of using my 3090 for NVENC for this reason. The quality is similar and NVENC is faster even the 13900K, but the file size increase is almost double and too hard to bear when hard drives are forever expensive.
I was just wondering if you had tried using QuickSync and what the results might be compared to NVENC and CPU-only encoding.

Forgot to mention earlier.

For those wanting more SATA ports, get one of those LSI raid sas cards on ebay for $30-40 that can be flashed to IT mode. Easily 8 more ports. IIRC it requires an x8 slot.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/194910024856

This already comes preflashed and includes proper cables.

DDR4 is a deal breaker. Why would anyone who wants a new build will do that? It's like buying a GTX 780 that's how old DDR4 is. Makes no sense for someone future proofing a new build. My last build was running strong for 7 years.

Am considering buying a gaming desktop in near future for my 10yo son and I and was leaning towards that Costco $1k BF deal. Also think it would be a fun thing to build one together but am not very good at picking parts. What would be a good rig built around this set? It would also serve as my general computer for bills/browse/etc.
Depends on multiple things like resolution. I would wait until amd releases next gen gpu if you can, prices will drop and you could probably get a great deal on a 6900xt or 3080. Aside from that just pick out a case you like, a psu(I recommend 750 watts or more) and get some ram.

Thanks OP, I'm upgrading my 10 yrs old Xeon CPU to this CPU. I'm looking for a budget build and this bundle perfectly fits. I don't care about ddr4 ram since ddr5 is hella expensive now

For anyone who has an older ddr4 system this will be a huge upgrade and a very affordable one at that. I am moving from a 1950x and this will beat it, especially in gaming.

There are tons of comparisons but in most cases the gains aren't substantial, especially for gaming.

Modern processors and memory are more than sufficient for gaming, and the graphics card is the bottleneck in most cases. The DDR5 results clearly showed that. The performance difference in gaming between the two extremes (DDR4-2133 C15 and DDR5-6400 C36) was only around 8%. However, once we stepped up to something better, like DDR4-3200 C15, DDR5-6400 C36 was only 2% faster.

I'd upgrade to this in a heartbeat if Micro Center was nearby. I could upgrade from my i9-9900k and just keep my existing 32GB DDR4 for less than the cost of just the CPU vs buying CPU+MB+DDR5 which would probably be $800+. Also could sell my old CPU+MB and would be a very cheap upgrade.
