Just want to add that you should check your local thrift stores if you're just looking for simple stereo amplification. I've bought several donated avr receivers from brands like Denon, Yamaha, etc for between $10-$30 that were $1000+ when new. You'll get remote control capability (although you may need to buy a $6 universal remote since many of these used amps don't have the remote) and lots of other features like subwoofer output, phono inputs, headphone outputs, etc etc. The used avr will be much larger and use more power than a mini class D amp, but that's just part of the give and take for saving money. ✌🏼
I've found so many of these AVR's for dirt cheap that I've stopped buying them. I just couldn't resist the deal. I think I have like 10 AVR's in my house now. Lol. I'm currently using a slim line Marantz AVR I picked up for $35 with the original remote.

"Note that this is for passive speakers only"

When have stereo power amps ever been designed to mate with powered speakers??

I had considered using an inline preamp but was concerned with potential damage to my receiver.
The djpre has a light to show you when the output is too loud and producing distortion. If you're seeing that light with the djpre in your setup and the volume is still too low, something is wrong with your cartridge or the RIAA circuit in your stereo.

The amp was great but I decided to return it and get a 2.1 amp so I could control the volume of my sub more directly. I didn't have the amp for long but that's not a comment on the quality -- it really was great -- just a decision based on my needs. If you aren't adding a subwoofer, it's just about perfect for the cost.

Bought this amp back in May to drive a pair of Dayton Audio BST-1 High Power Pro Tactile Bass Shaker 50 Watts [amazon.com] which are mounted to my sim racing rig [reddit.com] and controlled by SimHub [simhubdash.com].

Very satisfied with the results!

This thing is amazing! I have it hooked up to 48V 7.3A psu (aliexpress) and installed Sparkos op amps (thanks Cheapaudioman) pushing JBL Studio 350s (thanks Zeos). This has to be one of the best budget setups out there. Pair with a good DAC and it it can Pepsi Challenge systems that cost 3x as much.

Main downside is no sub out. I connected SVS sub but, as mentioned, volume does not control the sub so I have to adjust sub when adjusting volume sometimes.

Love this amp. Sounds much better than my SMSL DA-9.

Any tips when looking amp or speakers in Thrift stores? How do I avoid lemons?

All my local places have either a 7 or 15 day return window on electronics. I do power on the units in the store just to make sure it powers on and gives an audible speaker relay "click" sound. Of all the AVR's I've picked up using this simple test, they've all worked fine. Just last night I tested a PERFECT Yamaha R-S202 I picked up for $19 (sells new for $250). It didn't have the remote, but if you press and hold the SOURCE button, it will connect with your device. It connected and sounded GREAT with Bluetooth from my iPhone! I tested the CD input and the tuner. I let it play LOUD for about an hour. All perfect 👌🏼
I saw a really clean new-ish Sony AVR that are popular in some circles. I plugged it in at the store and it powered on. Yay! But then it said "protection" on the display. Boo! I checked to see if there were any stray wires between the rear speaker terminals, but there weren't. I think I've even did a factory reset right there in the store, but no dice. Still said "protect". I moved on...

Right there with you. Got half a dozen now that way. Some incredible finds. Goodwill has gotten wise to this now and has been shuttling the good stuff to the online auction folks.

Note that this is for passive speakers only. It does not include a headphone amp. You can, however, connect an active sub with a built-in crossover to the 3.5mm jack. So while it's a 2.0 amp, it can work as a 2.1 setup.
I use a two rca Y-cables to split my source to my amp and my subwoofer. Works great.
