If you are willing to gamble a bit, AAFES has done 25% off these watches for black Friday the past couple years.

I've been waiting for this deal to come back for the speedmaster but want the sapphire model for practicality (I tend to beat up my watches). Any way to buy the hesalite from AAFES and exchange at an AD for the sapphire?
I've been told that AAFES can order any model from Omega. I'm not sure they apply sale prices to things they don't "stock". You would have to call to find out, but it may be possible.

speedies have gone up in price so much recently
Omega put a new improved movement in. That's why they are priced higher than before.

I agree… I went with sapphire, it's well worth it for both reasons you mentioned. The hand wind movement is gorgeous and it's a shame they hide it away forever. If all you have ever had with a display caseback is an automatic, the speedy is literally twice as nice as you don't have a rotor weight blocking half of it. They do have the same movement at least now though. The previous models used cheap looking, unfinished movements with a derlin (plastic) brake on the hesalite model (because you couldn't see it anyway)

And sapphire is absolutely the best crystal material for everyday use. Sure you can buff out most dings with polywatch, but people think it's some kind of magic wand. It's literally just an abrasive paste. Every time you use it you are permanently removing layers of plastic. To buff out a scratch, you need to remove enough layers of plastic so that the new top level of the watch is below the deepest part of the scratch.

For tiny little surface scratches that are only a few microns deep, no problem. But the more you buff, the more plastic you are removing until the crystal becomes thin and brittle and eventually instead of scratching, it cleaves.

I like acrylic crystal, I like the "warmth", my Datejust has an acrylic crystal. But there's a reason 99% of modern luxury watches have sapphire crystals...
I have the sapphire too (wearing it right now actually with the nato bracelet from the hesalite version). It's great and improved over the last sapphire sandwich version (the milky ring is reduced). Also, you get the display caseback which is neat with the new movement. That said, the hesalite looks really cool and it has the history behind it. You get that perfect curve you just can't get with sapphire and it has that warm look. It's worth looking at both before deciding for sure.

For people who don't qualify for AAFES pricing, try to negotiate at an AD. I got 20% off mine.

These changes take away from speedy. Omega has countless models with those features. Speed was special because it was simple and as close as possible to original. Now it's just another seamaster
The Speedmaster is a mechanical chronograph. There is not such thing as a simple mechanical chronograph.

The outside of the 3861 looks more like the original Speedmaster. The movement has a more attractive finish and is far more accurate. Also, there is only one movement. No need to create a second movement for sapphire case back models because you used plastic parts in the cheaper watch.

So, you don't like the new Speedmaster because it looks more like the original and is more accurate? That sounds like an unpopular opinion.

Every brand does near annual increases. Has little to do with inflation.

about 14% since the new speedys were introduced a little over a year ago, 2 price increases this year and Sept 1st they went up 5% again, hasn't been "annual." but most brands have increased their prices since covid, not just omega

For potential Speedy owners, be aware that Omega service on chronographs is $700+ which they recommend every 4-5 years (although many people go much longer). You can get great local service for far less (make sure they have lots of good reviews that specifically mention your model).

I have an older hesalite Speedmaster (3570.50) and have used polywatch to buff the crystal a few times (using the original tube I bought with the watch). I've never had a scratch deep enough that did not come out completely and I've never felt that I was making the crystal significantly (or even noticeably) thinner or vulnerable to breaking. Genuine replacement crystals are relatively cheap in case of any serious issues - genuine sapphire replacement is *not* cheap (although there are generic options).

I do wish it had a display back, but I prefer the look of the hesalite on the front.

5K for a watch? Lmao, biggest waste of money ever, buy something that does the same shit (or more) for $300 and donate the rest, you ain't impressing anybody.
It's not about "impressing" someone, it's about having a fine piece of jewelry. If you think $5K is much, luxury watches aren't for you. Why do people bash deals not aimed at them.

I bought the Planet Ocean, and have been loving it since. It's a fun series albeit a bit heavier than normal. The Aqua Terra series are good for lightweight Omega.

Rolex does an annual increase every year. Always has.

As for the speedy, the hesalite is up $100 since release and the sapphire is up $50. See https://www.space.com/omega-speed...hronometer for release pricing.

It's less than a 2% difference.

Is this speedmaster moonwatch the most recent version? Isnt omega logo printed on old ones only?

It's the current version. The hesalite has a printed omega logo. The sapphire has the applied logo.
