TLDR: Upgrading a line on Verizon gives another $250 discount, on top of the $250 sale on the phone. This can be done not only for in-stock phones but for orders, as well, but it must be new- not refurbished/open box.
Long version:
As has been covered, the discount for turning in an S21 is technically a $600 coupon + $200 gift card. The phones we turned in were Verizon locked, and we purchased unlocked ones.
We upgraded my wife's S21+ to an S22+ 128GB, and I ordered a refurbished S21 off amazon for $300 and upgraded it for an S22+ 256GB, which the store ordered and I can pick up next week. At Best Buy, for each upgrade we paid $0 and received a $200 gift card.
For her 128GB phone, since the cost was 999-250-250=499, we essentially "wasted" $100 of the $600 coupon.
For my 256GB phone, since the cost was 1049-250-250=549, we essentially "wasted" $50 of the $600 coupon.
Of course, Verizon always charges you $35 every time you upgrade a line. Overall, though, being able to walk into the store with her S21+ and walk out with an S22+ and a $200 gift card is definitely the slickest phone deal I've had. And buying a $300 phone for myself so I could also get a S22+ and a $200 gift card was also excellent. I'm not sure how long the $250 carrier activation discount is good for, but hopefully it works out for some more people!
Finally, it's worth mentioning that our best buy (Columbus OH, Easton) let us smart switch data from her old phone to her new one, but it took forever, and some people have reported in this thread about charging for the data transfer. Just use smart switch to back it up on your computer before you go and save yourself the hassle/haggling.
My BB rep couldn't get the $250 Tmo discount to apply to a pickup/delivery phone order, so I went with the 128 GB variant they had in stock. He also couldn't apply the "extra" $91 promo value to accessories or the gift card so that is essentially lost unless you choose a more expensive phone (like the Ultra or 256 S22+ if they have it in stock).
So, start to finish, I bought a used locked S21 128 from Amazon for about 320, and got the S22 128 and $200 BB gift card. I did go through with a cheap case and screen protectors for $15x2, but it's totally worth it to try to keep BB doing this promo in the future
***If you have Verizon, the Samsung rep said they are offering the TIV deal plus 250 and another 250 for upgrades. This would likely net a $450 BB GC if buying same phone and trading same phone. EDIT: Judging from the post above mine, the Verizon discount is equal to Tmo, just an extra $250 with "loss" of value unless you get a pricier phone.
Final OOP cost ~$120 plus the time to research and have the BB rep try several attempts to do the 256 variant and try to apply lost value, etc.
$200 BB GC and phone in hand...I'm a happy camper!
Sorry to everyone who have terrible experiences with this. The BB I went to was a great experience, essentially going above and beyond to try to maximize the value for me. All I had to do was be patient and walk the reps through the steps that you all shared on here. Good luck and happy holidays!
