"A" is the budget line, "S" is the more premium line, 2nd only to the "S Pro". In my experience, the A tablets are not as responsive/snappy, and the screens aren't as sharp.
A is basic entry level, think targeted for cheap usage for children or folks that just need the extreme basics. S is their main line.

Tab A7 processor faster than Tab A8 processor. I'm not sure why this device even exists. It's not a horrible deal but we've seen the A7 at this price many times.

I've been using the A8 64g model about 1-4 hours daily for the past year. No charging issues, but I do use Samsung's battery protector that limits charging to 85% capacity. "A" line of devices don't get all of Samsung's software bells and whistles but they work far better than Fire tablets and other sub $100 budget tablets.
