You only get 3 months at the discounted rates, then they soar back to normal. It doesn't seem like much of a deal considering the normal rates aren't anything special.
Not when you have Google Voice. Pop in SIM, activate with a new number, start GV app & tell it to update forwarding number using the phone's assigned number. Done (minus some optional housecleaning like removing the old number to forward to).
In my experience, Google Voice number wasn't accepted by few services that would need it for OTP. It would classify as a VOIP and not accept it. Thats the only concern I had and would mean I'd need to change the OTP numbers of a few when switching networks. Didn't you run into it?

I've tried every MVNO in my area: Tello, Us Cellular, Mint, all of them worked great.

Tried LycaMobile for this deal, just horrible. Website stinks, data is terrible. I'm porting out 5 days in.

Had enough w this guys.. their sim is not receiving any calls for one month. Their Cc is good at raising tickets on every call. After that no response/action on that issue. Every agent that I spoke said that it's a known issue with lyca that for some reason some ppl are not getting incoming calls.

So many important details left out of this Advertisement "Deal".

Highlight the seller points and omit the fine print/drawbacks to get those affiliate sales must be the SD Staff mantra 😑
Has it always been this bad? I feel like the shilling has been even more shameless lately.

I ordered the five dollar deal last time like two months ago.. but I didn't need the service like I thought so if still in the package in my glove box for emergencies. Can I use that SIM to sign up for this plan?

I just switched to Lyca with the $5 / 2GB promotion. The process is painful. I had to submit some form online and contact the CS and they re-entered all my information, and took several hours to port in (they didn't put the pin correctly so it wasted 24 hours at first). After setting up the account, I found that the auto pay is off, but in order to add my credit card, I have to make a purchase. So is it what you guys add the credit card? But I guess I will be porting out at the end of cycle given such bad experience.

you can not send or receive *premium* short text messages.
Go figure what they classify as premium.
It was a nightmare when I had to confirm things with banks, google, or many apps, etc.
I had to cancel/transfer service before it even hit 3 months mark.
Would not ever recommend,

Ah almost forgot... my phone ( but rather service ) would fall asleep. If i was not holding phone in my hands doing something the phone calls would go straight to the mailbox - without even a missed call nor any notifications !!! WTF ?
Never with any other provider..

Avoid at any cost...

Be warned

Sending texts to short codes do not work on lyca service. I was not able to respond to CVS prescription refill texts. Lyca cs said that they do not support texts to short codes.

You misunderstand what the quoted person is doing I think: they are forwarding calls incoming to their long owned Google voice number to the (ever-changing) cell phone number that way long-term contacts don't have to update their information and can instead keep using the existing number as a main contact number (rather than having to message each and every one of your contacts every time you change phone numbers.) For one time password anyone doing what the Google voice advocate suggests would always want to use their ever-changing cell phone number. The downside is you would have to update your contact number on your Banks and anything else forcing you to use text based OTP, but for the average person that's considerably fewer updates than their friends/casual acquaintances... YMMV of course, say if you migrate your phone number to every new cell plan and don't do multiple phones or the like there would be no point in doing this.

Agreed. I'm cheap but not that cheap. Time is also money.
