Get a blade sharpener (power drill attachment) with a blade balancer cone. It's a must to balance your blades because your mower will vibrate and possibly cause damage if it isn't.
As to the sharpening questions. go watch the project farm guy (on YouTube) run through some sharpeners. You can pick up a lot of good info just watching him evaluate various sharpening tools.

Put on some PPE, grind a sharp and relatively even amount off of each end using a bench grinder. I hang the blade (5-point star in my case) from a pegboard hook and check if the blade is balanced or if I need to overgrind one side (that side hangs low on the hook). I may or may not finish with a hand file before I check balance again. Reinstall and torque to 32 ft-lb.
An alternate for people that don't have a bench grinder is to secure the blade in a bench vice or clamp it to a study work surface. Securing the blade will make hand-filing more effective. Please do check balance before reinstalling and torquing bolt--your engine will thank you.
