So is this the 'pay.an exhorborent fee' membership drummed up during the console shortage?

Pretty much. Hopefully they open it up to non-members too.

I bought this player back in the summer when it was $229. After own my Sony refurbished 4K player for 3 years, I was extremely impressed with the quality of this player. I highly recommend it if you don't want to pay a fortune for your 4K player. No complaints here!

Got this back on BF 2020 for $150. I haven't used it as much as I've liked, but I have no complaints with it. It supports HDR10+ if you care about that.

I don't have the paid membership and I see it for $199. I just have a regular Best Buy login

Man I wish blockbuster was still around. I am a watch a movie once and forget it kind of guy. Buying 4k blu-ray movies is a waste of money for me. Any places that let you rent them?

GameFly is probably your best bet. They have a movie only plan and honestly a great 4K selection with a few boutique/hard to find titles. They don't get anywhere close to the old Netflix back catalog for DVD or Blu ray, but if you want 4K they're your best bet.

I think Redbox has some hit movies in very specific markets on 4K, but doesn't seem like they fully invested in it.

Good points. We use redbox a few times a month for Blu-ray, particularly when we want a quality audio experience over streaming.

If I buy this for Christmas, it will be in preparation for moving to a 4k TV some day; My 60" 1080p is still going strong, and changing it will be down the road a bit.

Great player unless you like your movies randomly freezing while playing. If you do like freezing then get a Sony 4K player.

UPDATE: In case I was not clear above... this Panasonic player doesn't freeze while Sony ones do.

I'm currently using a PS3 as a blue ray player because it still runs.
What are the biggest advantages to replacing it with something like this?

The PS3 is currently hooked up to a Denon AVR-X2300W with a 5.1 surround consisting of JBL 290's and such.
The display is a BENQ MH530FHD projector that will be upgraded eventually to a 4K model (Hoping black Friday delivers on something nice, I've only seen the Optoma from yesterday but the dead pixel issue is something I'm not willing to deal with and I really want a laser version).

For now, audio is a higher priority to me. Audio in my opinion really puts you in the experience better than video and I'm not really disappointed in the BenQ so far. So, would this Blu-ray player make a noticeable difference in my setup or is it better to wait for something else?

Thanks for any help.

Does this unit support SACD and DVD-A? From looking at the specs I think the answer is "no" but I just wanted to check. I'm looking for a move away from my Sony 4K player.

I have an Xbox Series X but hear it's not the best quality 4K player. Anyone have any experience with a XSX vs a standalone 4K player?
