It has been at this price often. This one has no 2.5Gbps port and is a lower model of RT-AX86U.
Also 512 MB RAM for the 86S model vs 1GB for the 86U model. May be an issue if you like to flash alternate firmware. Seems like this could impact performance but this is supposition only.

No, you cannot go solely by that as there are lots of tricks manufacturers can play to inflate those numbers. You should look at the number of streams a router can support at each frequency. For instance, a 3x3 setup should be able to outperform a 2x2 -- but you can play with stuff so a 2x2 could have higher numbers (that the user really won't ever see unless the client is right next to the router).
I did use this coupon a while back to buy AX86U when it was on sale. Coupon said 15% off "current price", so unless they changed wording, it should work. Coupon did not applied when scanned, but manager overrode the price.
Bought one to mess with. Ended up grabbing it for 148 + tax. (dead router trade in).
PS: The dual core vs quad core/ram doesn't really matter for a majority of people. The main CPU/RAM only typically matters if you're enabling every possible feature on the router itself.. QoS, VPN, monitoring, AI protection etc..
Radio performance is identical outside of tolerance range. They're FCC certified with the same power output.
The only major advantage AX86U has is its 2.5G port for 1GB+ ISP and File transferring.
Edit: Subjectively this model performs better (for me) over the newer gen 2 platform GT-AX6000 I also bought to mess with last month.
Firmware is more refined, radios perform like triband variants now. (GT-AX11000/GT-AXE11000).
They didn't on AX86U @ release...
IMO in terms of value...
GT-AC2900 for 90-110 USD
AX86S for 150-180 USD on sale.
AX86U @ 220 USD (Makes sense if price difference between AX86S is big enough.. if you need 2.5G port, by all means).
These are the best 4x4 5G options that perform and punch well into price class vs competition.

Was just looking and it still seems to say the same thing.
"Customer upon recycling of a modem, router or gateway (modem/router combo) will receive one 15% off recycle coupon toward the purchase of a modem, router or gateway at the product's then-current selling price." From their trade-in current promotions page.
So I just take in my old router, get the coupon and then use it on the new purchase?
Just wondering if there's a way to purchase online to get PPCB and then pick up in store, using coupon to get the discount?

Bring in old router> go to pick up AX86S off shelf> go to customer service desk and ask to trade it in and purchase new model.
They will print out a coupon and trade in form > the coupon worked for me without override today, which shocked even the CS rep working there as they usually have problems with most trade in offers for newer/sale items.
The AX86S product page on the site advertises "trade in" itself incase they give you trouble. A lot of routers do not.

I don't suppose it can be purchased online first for CB and then the coupon applied at pickup?

The coupon only works for physical trade in.. meaning you have to release funds back to card unless pickup can override prices. I don't know.
Customer service desk does trade in + coupon.
