This radar was a gamechanger for me. It gives you confidence on the road so you don't have to constantly turn your head around to look for cars. This is also one of the only products I've ever seen with overwhelming 5 star reviews.

Highly recommend this for anyone on the fence. I've ridden around 1000 miles with mine. I never had a false negative (where a vehicle approached from behind but my Edge gave no notification). I had a few false positives (usually if I crossed an intersection and then traffic begins driving perpendicular to me from behind), but they were rare and also I'd much rather it falsely alert me to a car than the other way around.

Where this unit really shines, in my opinion, is more rural riding where traffic is rarer. In the city it can also be a constant beeping. I'll sometimes turn off the alerts in the city. I've had 100-120 cars pass me on a one-hour ride.

All in all, it's a great piece of mind. I use this with a Bontrager front indicator light and my Edge 530.

I know you don't want a bike computer, but the Garmin Edge 530 is pretty small and you can just mount it on your stem so it's unobtrusive. They're available as refiurbs right now for $150 from Bikecloset [bikecloset.com].

Alternatively, just find a cheap old smartphone and install the Varia app. Even a crappy 5-10 year phone that you can buy for peanuts will work for that.

I gave it 4 stars for the fact that you can't turn down the radar a little. I ride a lot on the service roads and the radar is so sensitive that it keeps giving false notifications for the cars on the highway than the service road. So after a while I tend to ignore the warnings and had close calls when a car really is on the service road instead of the highway!

Just came to say I love this taillight. Bought it last year, and its been a lifesaver biking on roads. If you have the right cyclecomputer its a much better system than a rearview mirror, or other alternatives.

I ride 6,000 miles a year and have had this connected to my wahoo GPS for almost 2 years now. I can't express how much this has changed my life. It gives you confidence and prevents you from having to constantly look around your shoulder to see if a car is there. It picks up cars up to 450 ft behind you. Worth its weight in gold.

I don't understand what this is for. I've been riding for 30 years and I don't get all these "now I'm confident when I ride" comments and stuff like that. I've never been worried about someone slamming into me from behind. Is this really a thing people are obsessive about?

It's not just about that. On quieter country roads without a bike lane it's nice to be able to ride in the middle of the road, Knowing that the device gives you ample warning to pull to the right side of the road with ample time before the car approaches. Nice to be able to do this without constantly checking around your shoulder. It reports the distance of the car so you know how quickly it is approaching and how far back it is from you. It also reports up to 8 to 10 cars at once so you know if you have a whole line of them about to pass.

This is my exact use case. Mostly quiet scenic rounds in North Jersey / NY State and I like to ride on the left side of the white line (less debris and avoiding flats) so the beeps give me time to shift right, give the cars room, they give me room, and I ride with confidence.

Especially before descents (although I still look back) where I'll take a more center line going down to prepare for a faster turn in.

Of all the crap I bought getting into this hobby this really is one of the best things...hard to put a $ value on peace of mind out there.

Sorry if this is shill-y...but for a hobby so plagued with diminishing returns, I feel strongly about the stuff that is a significant net positive lol

+1 I posted similar sentiment on last time it was at this price.

I used to ride with helmet rear mirror, and this alerted me before I noticed anything in mirror.

I even attached to my Kid Trailer (burley) when I tow them and it is great.

Understandable. What I find is that I'm not longer watching that white line and the edge of the road picking my path. I can now use much more road. It beeps, I move back over. Going downhill you can now take the road, so much safer. When riding with friends I can ride along side them and drop back when it beeps. It makes riding much more relaxed, enjoyable and believe it or not safer. Do you need it? Sure a mirror you are constantly checking, or looking over your should works as well. If you are on the fence yeah... get it. These are worth it imho.

With more electric vehicles, you may not always know when a car is behind you. With this device, I was on a windy ride recently, and I would yell car back before the guy behind me even knew a car was coming. With the wind it was hard to hear. In other instances, a person behind you may simply not yell car back. This device is very important for safety alone.
