My dad was a professional painter that owned a paint and wallpaper store when he was young, so I grew up with a lot of painting equipment and training. A shitty paintbrush is truly a detriment to painting. It holds less paint, it drops bristles in the work, the low bristle density creates coarse brush marks, and they are hardly even worth cleaning off to use again.

If you have a single job and will just throw things away, maybe this fits what you want. If you will take the time to wash your brush off in some mineral spirits, then I'd recommend spending a little more for decent tools. I do understand though that a single decent brush can cost as much as this kit.

I bought one of these kits from Sam's recently for about $13 on sale. The brushes are surprisingly good quality, and I'd recommend them over this kit if you have Sam's as an option.

The quality of painting supplies will impact the quality of the final paint job, so this may not be the best place to cut costs if you really care about the final outcome as skill alone can't do much to overcome cheap tools.

How do you feel about Harbor Freight's Avanti? I got two of those kits for painting my condo. I'm not a fan of the metal trays because I'm lazy and sometimes don't use a liner and leave them in the sink and they get rusty lol

I haven't used those so I can't give an assessment. Harbor Freight is a mixed bag of garbage and great, so I suppose it could go either way.

The Valspar brushes at Lowes are good for the money. They are pretty much on par with the Purdy ones, but they are a little less expensive.

It takes actual painting to really judge a brush, but here's how to do a quick assessment. Look directly into the brush. Is there a void or lack of uniformity in the bristles. Squeeze the bristles. How dense does it feel compared to other brushes of the same size. Beat the bristles against your palm. Maybe one falling out might be normal, but if they keep coming the bristles are secured poorly. Finally a silly assessment is how well the handle is sanded. If they didn't take the time to sand the handle, there's a good chance they didn't invest in other areas.
