They dont routinely get hacked, Synology has had just as many exposures to ransomware such as eCh0raix, brute force attacks happen.

The problem is as mentioned people open up the internet and use very easy to guess passwords, then they also dont update their environment regularly. Been running QNAP NAS devices for over 10 years now, not a single ransomware issue in my environment.

If you look at the majority of people who get hit with it, its people who haven't updated in a long time.

Its not much more secure, they had a vulnerability for well over a year after it was reported to them and still didnt do anything about it a few years ago.

They are definitely more "Apple like" I had synology units in the past they were nice, but the price tag for the hardware you got was not equal and now they lost their OS edge and QNAP OS in my opinion is way more powerful and also user friendly. That was not true 5 years ago.

You can still use it locally and just not expose it to the internet, which is probably best for sensitive data anyway.

Same thing happened to Synology users.

Yep on average you would be looking to spend minimum an extra $100 for similar hardware.

Just want to add for those really worried but want to try QNAP, just enable to 2FA and you should be 99.9% safe against most forms of brute attacks, takes less than a minute and easier than using a VPN.

https://www.qnap.com/en-us/how-to...gin-in-nas
2fa by itself really isn't an adequate solution to avoid hacks.

Many of the qnap hacks were via vulnerabilities in software that, by default, qnap encouraged people to use with upnp and open ports on their router. It wasn't just about whether malicious users could log into the web interface.

The best practice for any NAS is to keep it behind a VPN, or to only use it locally. Qnap had some of the high-profile hacks, but other vendors have been hit too.

I might have missed. Do you have a link from SD or anywhere else?

Hes correct not sure why it didnt pop up but it was a Newegg sale, unfortunately it was sold out extremely fast so very YMMV they also had the 6 bay for I believe like $420 which sold out quickly as well.

Unfortunately I doubt we will get prices that low soon again on these, components cause of inflation and supply chain cost a lot more so profit margins getting impacted.

Damm, now I wish it was matching that sale. I'd jump on the 6 bay for that price. Arrrrgh I was happier not knowing .. except I woudn't be. Yes, no, yes, no. Angst moment!

Edit: the camel let me down. It claims 399 was the lowest price too.

Have the slightly older 453-be version of this and this is a good price in todays market. Solid feature set and while the software is not apple like, I've made do with google. Forum guidance is better, qnap is pretty bad at keeping documentation up to date but their help desk is quite good. A few things that swung me towards qnap: included 8 ip camera licenses and onboard hdmi. The first is a great value as synology charges a good bit more and the second is helpful as a direct media player or admin screen. Plex runs great and transcodes with no issues. Has been a great little box for my use cases: general file storage, network storage, plex server, ip camera recorder, and automated media manager.

FYI, you can upgrade this to 32GB RAM by using dual rank memory.

Timetec has a 32 GB 2x16 DDR4-266 dual rank kit for $78 on Amazon.

I dont think I got the Timetec but I do have 32GB of RAM in mine all usable and confirmed by the OS and my virtual clients so for people who want to play around with docker and VM's it a great upgrade for something that would normally be super expensive.

Exactly. I'm doing the same, using the extra memory for virtualization and containerization, which would be difficult if I were limited to QNAP's default.

How is the performance on this model? I have an entry level model TS-231P from a few years ago, and it was painful to open up folders with large number (thousands) of pictures.

I had a TS-231 in the past as well. This current model has a much faster processor. I don't use it to transcode or anything like that, but I have THOUSANDS of pictures stored and I stream 4K UHD video files to multiple clients at the same time via Kodi, and it doesn't break a sweat.

Actually, I just bought a second one to replace my primary QNAP that has the Intel CPU bug.

Thank you! This is super helpful and I just pulled the trigger.
