Correct me if I'm wrong but I think this has been the price for a while....
This time it works for old customers, last time is works only for new customers.
I like that Android phones are starting to get reasonable compact again

Oh no. I thought I did everything right here.

Google says my S21 Trade in (purchased from eBay like most people here...) was reported: "lost or stolen." My credit card was refunded $0.00 instead of the $417.50 as expected.

What's my recourse here? Thanks for any help.

I'm not sure if that means they opened your trade-in box and it was empty, or the phone you sent in was reported as "lost or stolen" by a previous owner and its IMEI is blacklisted.

Ask them to send the phone back (if the phone was in your trade-in box), then return the phone on Ebay for a refund.

It reads more like the latter. The exact wording on the trade-in page is: "Condition when received

Samsung Galaxy S21 (128GB Other)
Phone reported lost or stolen"

That to me sounds like they did receive the product since they list it and its size.

I'm not opposed to requesting the phone back and sending it back to the ebay seller, but that still leaves me out the trade-in credit which is significantly more than the cost of the phone....not to mention that I'm fighting the calendar to get the phone back and send it to the seller before the end of the month when the holiday extended returns end.

I'm doubting they'll accept another trade-in phone too...

I just checked and the 30-day S22 deal is still available. If the time frame works out for you:
* Return the current phone (if it's still within the allowed return period).
* Get the trade-in phone back and return it to Ebay seller.
* Place another Fi S22 order.
* Get another trade-in phone and send it in.

Sorry for the problems... I'd start the return process with the ebay seller even before I got the phone back. You may get lucky and they may not want the phone returned.

I don't always remember to do this myself, but I try to look up the IMEI on one of the carrier websites on trade in phones. Sometimes will give you a hit if it's blacklisted.

Interesting data point that shows that they're at least testing the phone to the point that they can determine the IMEI to be able to check it.

Glad I didn't send in the phones with defective SIM card readers

I do wonder how deep the testing goes... testing the SIM card reader is pretty easy... but then, if you wanted to test actual connectivity, you'd need SIMs for the various carriers...

Here's another data point...I sold an iPhone11 to Gizmogo back in October. For carrier, I selected "Other" (vs AT&T, Verizon, T-mo). They inspected it, said it was still locked to Tracfone and offered a very low amount. I refused and asked them to ship it back which they did. The information on the labels indicate that they did a very thorough check of everything: Battery History (BH), IMEI Status, Serial number, even checking to see if the battery, cameras, screen are genuine.

The one difference there is that Gizmodo is going to refurb/resell... Asurion or whoever is doing the trades is going to sell them in bulk to another refurb/recycle firm.

Maybe they check the imei with a manufacturer database? I remember of an Apple tool online that can check if a phone is locked to a carrier or unlocked.

The warehouse that receive the trade-in phones for Fi has the same address where the refurbished iPhones sold by Tracfone are shipped from. I suspect that Asurion buys the trade-in phones from Fi and resell them through/to Tracfone.

Most of these phone resellers/recyclers have software to check everything, probably unlock them too. That's why Fi doesn't care if the phone is unlocked or not.
