Unpopular opinion here… buying new is overspending, but used. I've been in the market for a few months now. At work, I've used the Embody and Aeron chairs. Both are good chairs. My wife WFH majority of time so been in the market for a new chair for her.
I thought about pulling the trigger on the last HM deal, but decided I should have her try them out first as return policy is next to impossible. I found a used office furniture store close to my house in Chicago… it was AWESOME! She was able to sit in the Aeron chair and she really did not like it. I'm not saying it's a bad chair and personally I sit in it every day at work. BUT I highly recommend trying it and other options for yourself before buying it based off someone else's word.
We both prefer the Steelcase Gesture chair. It gives the same structural back support as the HM Embody chair, but the arms are way more adjustable - like a monitor arm. As far as aesthetics, they both look good.
For price reference, these chairs were the following prices for used, very good/like new condition at the used office furniture store:
HM Aeron: $550 for Size B which is the most common size. This chair is also very easy to find used.
HM Embody: $1,000. This chair is difficult to find used.
Steelcase Gesture: $650. Again difficult to find used.
Long story short, we are going to buy the Steelcase Gesture. Personally I would have splurged for the Embody as the HM name speaks to me more, but from a true comfort and ergo perspective, they are virtually the same.
why do you/people love these chairs so much? I need a chair but it's hard to pull the trigger on a chair in this price range without touching it or knowing what makes herman miller so good.
The biggest difference between the Aeron and regular office chairs is the mesh seat. You can buy knock-offs with a mesh back, but it's the mesh seat that separates it from other chairs. Your bottom will stay much cooler on these. At first, the coolness is a revelation. Some of the women I worked with liked it at first, but then complained it was too cooling for them. Personally, I found the mesh seat uncomfortable long-term. My backside would get sore after sitting on it eight hours a day after a few months, but to each his own. Apparently, that isn't an issue for a lot of people here, they have a lot of fans.
I had one of these chairs for work, I dont get the overpriced hype it was mediocre in terms of support and durability, for this price top grain leather should be an option
Like many others, I suggest trying the mesh chairs before buying, or buy one with a good return policy. I sit in Mirra my office and it is the most uncomfortable chair I have ever tried. Hate that thing. They will be replacing it with Embody soon per my request, and I can't wait.
Another good option out there is Haworth Fern - it is getting good reviews and I tried one and it felt pretty good.
These prices are still higher than ordering direct from HM through a reseller any time of the year. Got my customized Embody for $1100 with no sale.
This….go to HM's website and look up authorized resellers. You likely won't get it as fast as ordering direct thru HM or a third party website, but it will be much cheaper and you will have full warranty.
Both Embody's I ordered were around $1100 each (including tax and shipping), and I was able to pick the exact build combo (fabric, wheels, etc - all of which were upgraded from standard build).

Any recommendations on who to ask? I don't have a dealer near me
I feel that many who can't afford the Aeron are gaslighting themselves out of it because of the price. Mostly my friends, when I talk to them about HM. "You" deserve better and the best life have to offer...., so I yolo'ed on this deal. Anyways, each to their own as everyone's budget differs.

How much was that if you don't mind me asking. I have to do the same on my Aeron.
Look up on amazon and pick the one that come with removal cylinder tool. It's gonna be really hard to remove the old cylinder if you don't have the tools.
I've been flipping these HM chairs for years. My advice:
- If you have the money and really want the warranty then go the new one.
- If not you just need to spend time on FB market place to look for a used one. It will safe you a lot of money. New chair is going around $700-800 on market place and of course without the warranty.
just mine Aeron on Tuesday. So far I'm not impressed I actually feel like its to small, I'm 5'10" and their chart said B but I feel like C would have been better. I am awaiting the embody still, will test both and return one but right now I feel like Aeron going back. Also lumbar not height adjustable, I feel like cheaper chairs offer this, at this price Aeron should have every feature imaginable.

I had a chair from OfficeMax that literally lasted me about 6 to 7 years before it became uncomfortable. It was $200.
Not to mention that these chairs that are $1,000 or more half the time aren't even made in a first world country.
These are literally highway robbery. There are not $1,000 worth of materials or labor in any of these.

Sour grapes
