I've been in the market for an espresso machine for awhile now. Costco is a place I've been frequenting because of their return policies and warranty, and this machine recently appeared. Seems to be a good combo grinder/espresso maker. Definitely a new product as there are only 4 reviews, but one of them compares it to a Breville Barista Touch which is reassuring. Might be a good value machine but it's too early to tell. I'm tired of waiting for a good Breville deal, so I'll post this here.

After some digging around the internet, the user manual is here:

I did a bit of digging, and concluded this NOT a dual boiler machine but a dual thermoblock. A true dual-boiler machine would cost much more, and with espresso machines if it's too good to be true it probably is.Shame on Costco/Sur La Table misrepresenting this product. This machine design is similar to the one below, which is a dual thermoblock:
https://www.homecoffeesolutions.c...1a88&_ss=r

Single vs dual thermoblock: https://www.homecoffeesolutions.c...ng-systems

Thermoblock vs thermocoil vs boiler:

I found this comment on Reddit regarding comparison of thermoblock vs boiler - the former leads to inconsitent water temperature.

"Thermoblocks are worse for several reasons, all of which involve temperature management:

with a boiler, the brew pathway, including the group, is heated by the passive heat of the boiler, or actively heated in the case of an e61 or electrically heated group. This means that when you pull a shot, the water doesn't lose much heat to its surroundings on the way to the puck. A thermoblock machine never really gets hot, so the brew pathway will suck heat from the brew water in a very non predictable way (i.e. each shot will be affected slightly differently).

a boiler heats up all your brew water before the shot, whereas a thermoblock heats up water on demand. A pid controlled thermoblock will be able to heat water to a temperature which is dependent on the flow rate, because more contact time with the thermoblock means hotter water. Therefore, the brew temperature will be dependent on the flow rate, and hence the puck resistance. You might get away with this if you're always pulling classic 25s shots, but you certainly wont be able to experiment with things like ristretto and lungo as the change in flow will completely mess up your brew temperature.

High end thermoblock machines like the decent are only successful because they are extremely smart, and can dynamically change brew temperature to a very high accuracy using lots of fancy technology. A PID alone on a cheaper thermoblock machine simply wont give you consistent brew temperatures".
I wouldn't bet on quality. It looks very similar to the ones here

https://www.amazon.com/Espresso-M...U241FG3KTV

And I see several other names under that :

https://beem.co.uk/products/espre...der-15-bar

similar design, same grate pattern on the drain pan and tamper
I am in the exact same boat as OP here - spent the last few weeks waiting for a good Breville deal and got nothing.
Also am not willing to settle for anything that has plastic parts touching the hot water (so ruling out almost all of the super-automatic ones).

Was about to pull the trigger for Gaggia classic pro, but not sure which grinder should I get... then I saw this... hmmm really not sure about its quality, but could be a good gap-filler until a good Breville deals comes alone?

Thanks for posting!

You state Nespresso is mediocre meanwhile you prefer Keurig which has to be amongst the kings of mediocre coffee.

Yup, because i know what I'm getting from a keurig, which is drip coffee. Nespresso is attempting to make espresso, but it's not actually espresso. The resulting extraction is pretty mediocre. At least with a keurig I can get something that's actually drinkable. And I'm not kidding about having tried most of the nespresso pods - family member owns a higher end machine and I tried a bunch over multiple visits, thinking I might find something that's decent. But yeah, no, it's all bad. Even my worst shots are far better…

I opened mine up and I don't see any thermoblocks. There are two individual boilers though. Also I am able to pull a shot and steam at the same time without any issue. Definitely needs some time to warmup though. Maybe they upgraded?

Yep, definitely needs 20-30 seconds to warm up. No biggie as you need at least that much time to grind and tamp. My grinder blockage issues have gone away. Maybe it just needed a few grinds to season the chute with residue. Been using this every day and really can't complain. It froths well and since I'm a latte drinker it's not as if espresso shots have to be perfectly balanced. My pucks are still a little wet. That could be from the quality of grinder or maybe I just need to grind a little finer. Shots are coming out a little fast. Mid 20 seconds for 2:1 ratio using a grind setting of 15 for Starbucks espresso dark roast. Shots seem to benefit from pouring a little longer. I think I may go down to a grind setting of 14 and see if that results in a drier puck and better balanced espresso. But hard to complain about this machine for $400. I had picked up a Breville Touch on FB marketplace I planned to compare against but the Sur la Table behaving well enough I haven't had much incentive to compare.

I finally had a chance to compare the Sur la Table to the Breville Touch. To make sure I was comparing apples to apples I used the same grounds for both machines to eliminate grinder differences. 18 grams of Starbucks espresso dark roast (using grind setting oe12 in the Breville with inner burr left at default of 6) extracted for ~30 seconds in the Breville resulted in 36 grams of very agreeable espresso. The same 18 grams of grounds in the Sur la Table similarly took ~30 to extract 36 grams which I guess shouldn't be a surprise. However, the espresso from the Breville was noticeably more balanced and smooth. Also, the pucks from the Breville came out better, just a smidge wet but not soggy. The Sur la Table puck was a bit watery as usual. I guess I'll have to backtrack on what I said about the soggy pucks, it seems to be manifesting in the output. I tried filling the Sur la Table basket with more/less than 18 grams of espreso to see if I could get the pucks less watery and the output to taste better but didn't help. Similarly going up/down on grind didn't get things any closer to the Breville. I'm sure I could play around with different beans, etc. but darn it if the Breville just seems to be producing better espresso without any fuss!

If anyone is looking for a good setup that won't break the bank, jump on the Baratza Sette 270 Espresso Grinder and Gaggia Classic Pro combo from Whole Latte Love with promo code GAGGIA for just under $675 + tax shipped (and CB from some sites). If I hadn't gotten a good deal on the Breville I'd be looking at that. Almost unheard of sale price for the excellent Baratza grinder and perfect pairing with the Gaggia. Going to be a lot better than an all in one combo.

Can this make regular drip coffee (Americano) or is it espresso only?

This is an espresso machine with a grinder. Yes, one can make an americano with this. Make an espresso shot and add hot water to it from the dispenser.

This is not a filter pot or a French press. There is no drip coffee here.

Seems this is on closeout for $299 in the Canada warehouses. I'd say smokin' deal at that price. While I moved on to a breville I still have a soft spot for this one. I think perhaps with upgraded baskets and some pre-infusion you could get this to make pretty good espresso. If you're just making lattes I doubt you'd be able to tell much difference between this and a machine costing twice as much. I did a comparison between it an my breville and in retrospect I think the reason why the breville put out better tasting espresso is the pre-infusion.
