Many people grossly overestimate how much power they need. It's better to use the calculator from outer vision.com and save yourself some money. I've always used a rule of thumb that after calculating my config, I always have a spare 20% headroom. Meaning if it calculates my max power draw is 500 watts, then I will get a 600 watt psu. Many people seem to buy a 1000 watt psu then pair it with a Radeon 6700 xt which is laughable.

I would guess that is because articles are always saying the next generation of graphics cards need absurd levels of wattage. So people try to put in a PSU that will work with something they add down the road. But you are correct that people generally put in way more wattage than they currently need

If you normally operate within 15-20% of the max power, many power supplies, like this one, do not run the fans and will be MUCH quieter when browsing the web and watching videos. I bought a 850 watt supply for this reason and it's been so worth it.

I've noticed the power requirements have creeped up slowly over time and it depends on the generation of cards. However, I'm going for the 650 watts as I never splurge on a high end card ever as it's just not worth the value to me. Mid to mid high range is where my gpu budget is 650 watts should be enough for me. I've always gotten away with a 500 watt or lower psu and never had an issue. I'm getting this 650 watts as I'm pretty sure im upgrading to the 7700 or 7800 xt when it comes out.
