Opposite experience for me with the Samsung Smart Tags. Packed them in luggage/backpack while traveling to SF and they pinged the entire trip, regardless of how near/far I was from them. Pinged all day long in my hotel room from various Galaxy users passing by. Also tracked them on all flights, which let me know my checked bags boarded with me. Highly recommend them.

January 19th, 2021 - Samsung releases Galaxy SmartTag [samsung.com]

April 30th, 2021 - Apple launches AirTag [apple.com]

Who's copying whom?

The only issue I've had with these is when they are close to dying, I've never seen it go into the low battery phase. It just stops tracking no notification or anything. Instead, it shows the last location of when it was on as if that's its current location.

It seems nobody has asked the most obvious question: how are these Samsung smarttags compared to Apple airtags? Do they work better? Worse? Worth the lower price?
It's not really a great question since you cannot use airtags without apple products, and I'm assuming people looking at this thread do not have iPhones.

I'm asking because I'm thinking of buying these Samsung smarttags as gifts for Samsung phone owners even though I already have iPhones and airtags.

yep you can, as long as someone with a compatible Samsung device walks by it for their bluetooth to ping off it. Samsung smarttag works off the community (just like Apple air tags) so your luggage being in a highly populated area will get many pings, allowing you to see the location of it.

For those that have these or the apple ones...other than the novelty and luggage use, what else do you use these for?

Go look up what tile was, this is exactly the same.
read a little, it goes a long way to keep you from being ignorant.

https://www.theverge.com/22570161...comparison

Also, the verge article sugarcoats or is unaware of the fact that Tile app that enables location tracking doesn't have OS level permission to ping the trackers.

Tile app can get readily shut down in the background. there is a way to circumvent this in Android but not really on iOS even if you keep the location to always - which means even registered app users may not be contributing to the Tile network. As primary location tracking comes from phones, that makes Tile way crappier than other two.

And apple copying tiles. Tech is a community. No one company owns it.

The only time I tried to use one of my 6-8 month old Samsung trackers, it failed me because the battery was dead!
I noticed one of my other Samsung trackers worked very briefly and then died. I think the trackers don't know they're low until it's too late; it worked until I tried to find it.

yeah, I read it - these operate on the exact same tech as tile and trackr, both of which are no longer sold because they do not work. bt signal, 'crowd' type system where you're counting on other people with the app running to wander by your lost thing to tell the app where your thing is, but only if the signal can be picked up, which is not feasible with bt. I get it this site is here to sell crap on behalf of sponsors, but these things don't work.
sounds like you don't read all that well. I just noted that the others have OS level operation on the phones, so the SmartThings or Find My apps don't need to be running, whereas Tile app needs to run in the background.

Tiles do hit up Amazon sidewalk devices but they are usually sitting far from where these would come in handy (bars, restaurants, amusement parks, airports, etc...)

TIFWIW, I've got all three and I have couple of NIB Tile pros sitting around because they suck ass compared to the Airtags and SmartTags almost anywhere in US and EU I've been to.

They call it bundle discount. Try to log in and see if it shows. Add 2 or more.
I just tried it now and it still shows the discount.

Nah, you didn't read. It's not the exact same tech at all. Not worth arguing with someone who has their mind made up about something regardless of whether it's true or not.

It's the same technology. If you look at youtube comparisons, the general consensus is that they work as good as each other. It just depends on what universe you're part of (Samsung or Apple).

The consensus is also that the Smart Tags are just as good as the Smart Tag +. The features the + adds aren't really worth the shorter battery life.
