Yes, each map has its own special rules.

Personally I like the Africa expansion. The routes are color coordinated to match the terrain of Africa (e.g. mountain ranges are all black and white routes) which means depending on your tickets you may need a lot of just one or two colors. And in addition to just the normal train car cards you normally draw there are also terrain cards you can draw too. When you play a terrain card of a matching color when claiming a route it will double the points of the route (e.g. a 3-car route worth 4 points becomes 8-points when played with a terrain card). This can lead to some high scoring games which always fun.

I also really like Nordic (stand alone game, not an expansion) since it is only for 2-3 players. Having a slightly smaller map designed for fewer players is nice for those times when you have less people to play with.

I find India to be a little frustrating to play because of how quickly the board gets crowded. It's probably a map I would only recommend for more advanced players. That said, it also comes with Switzerland on the reverse side so you are getting two maps for the price of one. Switzerland is another 2-3 player map like Nordic--although I don't think it's nearly as well balanced as Nordic. Games can get very lopsided based on the luck of the draw.

Love this game and already have US and Europe. Is there anything different about others other than geographical locations?

Love this game. Played 5 rounds of US version over the Thanksgiving holiday and it was so much fun.

Got India expansion, thanks!

Usually the different versions have SOMETHING different about them.

Rails and Sails uses a combination of Trains and Boats, France is the one where you select the color of the track first before you lay down trains. Some have tunnels that may require more cards to play. It's worth looking at them in that regard with what new element is part of the game, and if the map looks interesting to you.

TTR London is the best implementation in my opinion. Gives you all the TTR juice, but doesn't overstay it's welcome. (It is* a shorter game; 4 player max). NY might be the same, but haven't played it

Yes, each of the expansions have different "twists" or additional features to the standard rules. For example, in TTR Old West, you choose a home city, and all of your routes must connect back to that city. In France, you actually have BUILD the routes before you can complete them. In India, you get substantial bonus points for building LOOPS between city pairs.
This may all sound daunting, but once you've played them a couple of times, these variations are a brilliant way to help keep the game fresh and compelling with new challenges and strategies.
Our family has really enjoyed these expansions:
France/Old West
Japan/ Italy
Nederland
India/Switzerland

Have fun!

Looks like Amazon has matched this. But it still has the same limited selection that Target has.

I might have to break those (Africa & India) open for New Years game night.

Had them both for a few years but usually played the PN one if we didn't play the USA one. Usually we would throw in the alien or t-rex to change up play on the USA one.

Was eyeing the Nordic one back when I got a bunch of them, but it wasn't a good price back then.

Thanks for reminding me why I bought them and what to look forward too.
