Not sure it's worth the premium over the classic vibe series, unless you really like the color scheme https://www.proaudiostar.com/open...board.html

I've been looking to buy a bass, is this a good deal? Or would it be better to buy something in person

It is a good deal although I'd pay the extra few bucks to order one that is not open box. Whoever returned that might have found it's QC wasn't quite right and it doesn't play great... These basses are very well regarded though

Ah I see… would I be better off spending a bit more and buying what op posted? https://www.fender.com/en-US/squi...30506.html

There have been a few excellent deals posted over the past few days but you might do better with a lightly-used instrument from FB Marketplace or CL. That would allow you to put your hands on it. Buying online has been fine for me but I'm not picky about things some other people find hard to live with (string spacing, neck profile, etc.).

Do a search on pro audio star, the site I posted before and search for "classic vibe Bass", there are a lot of bases right now that are equivalent quality but cheaper. You won't find the gold look though if that's what you're going for

It's decent if you love the look. The $599 MSRP is ludricrous though. You're paying premium for the limited edition.

Buying in person is nice because you can make sure it is setup well and doesn't have issues like poorly finished frets or over-cut nuts, but I've had sucess ordering too.

Personally, if I was in a $350-400 range, I'd get a used LTD Surveyor off eBay when one pops up. For new I like the Yamaha TRBXs.

There are a lot of great options in the $200-$300 range from Yamaha, Ibanez, Squire, etc. Just allocate a budget ($50-$100) for a proper set up or your instrument will play and feel like shit.

If you are interested in this deal, it's not bad.

I have this bass and actually enjoy gigging with it. Has a nice tone. Have had many compliments for the design.

Will it play like crap? I've bought a lot of instruments that played great right off the shelf.

I've had a few Fender guitars that played very well. Of course it's always possible it will need a little set up work.

A simple truss rod adjustment is easy if you watch a video and take your time.

Do these have knkw quality issues with setup?

No. The only argument for not doing the maintenance yourself on your first guitar is that you don't know what "proper" feels like. But like you said, there are plenty of resources available today and you don't need a ton of specialty tools (though some make a setup quicker).
