Unless you need all the monitoring features I would say it is a good buy

Depends on what phone you have, both only work with their individual OS, Apple Watch with iOS and Galaxy with Android.
That one's easy. Apple Watch if you have an iPhone. Galaxy Watch if you have anything else. The Apple Watch won't work if you have an Android phone. The newer Galaxy watches won't work with an iphone.
Device is for a kid without a phone (I understand with the cellular version a phone is not required for calls, messages, or gps). They are familiar with both apple and android OS.
You'll still need an iPhone to setup the Apple Watch, and an Android phone to setup the Galaxy Watch.
Oh really? Okay, glad I asked, Galaxy it is -- thank you!
