I've been told to absolutely not get the 256gb version of the M2, is that true ? Some issue that makes it actually slower than M1 ?

I think that only applies to the new M2 macbook pros

Edit: appears to apply to the air as well.

You're correct. I saw multiple articles that say get the 514gb.

Short answer: buy the 512GB model. Shortly after launching, reviewers found out that the base 256GB model uses a single NAND chip for storage, while the 512GB model and even the M1 MacBook Air use two chips. That results up to 50% slower SSD performance, making the 256GB model feel more sluggish as it struggles to read and write data to the hard drive.

If you don't Do heavy photos/videos gamings etc it's probably ok but my m1 air is very slow with like 10 websites open on Chrome.

You won't notice the difference..a single 256 is quick enough

Attached is a great video that goes into a detailed analysis regarding the base version of the M2 Macbook Air SSD performance.

PS. I'm most likely going to upgrade to 16gb of memory and be done with it.

Those days 256gb is enough only if you do web browsing and watching YouTube. If you do any work with pictures, videos and other large files, you will run out of storage before you even will start you project

Ram is not upgradable in those new apple computers, it's soldered to the motherboard
