I saw a tech reviewer perform battery drain test on this years iPads. This one lasted about 45-60 min more than m1 ipads. 9th gen lasted little more than that.

9th generation. Just be aware that, the new design is modern but it removes the home button & headphone jack and also camera is on the longer side (which is nice though) which means no magnetic Apple Pencil 2 support.
Performance wise both are pretty comparable today. If you have to upgrade you would have to upgrade 9th gen one year earlier, probably in 5 years depending on your intent and hope Apple figures out a way to support pencil 2 & camera on the same side.

To add to this. BB has the current M1 Air for $500 right now, but you can find open box for $454.99. It's 64GB but 50GB iCloud is 99 cents/mo or you can get deals on a tiny USB C flash drive for as little as $10 depending on how much storage you want. Plugs right into the port on your iPad for when you need the extra photos, movies etc.
