those little 5v adapters from all those echos you traded in work great!
Ideally you want to mount the light strip in a way that you don't actually see the strip, but its light reflected on the wall. . . If that's what you're doing then I wouldn't worry about possible damage to the paint upon removal. Otherwise, I would not mount it on a wall unless I am sure it will be there permanently. Besides the adhesive residue/remains and potential paint chipping, depending on how many coats of paint and how thin they were, you also would not be able to attach it anywhere else afterwards. You would first need to apply new double sided tape to the back of the LED strip.
