Anybody set one up before? I'm new to this. Hoping it's DIY-able.

all this PC stuff aside, I am not one for the ccp, privacy invasion, or keeping things up to date if they're working for my purposes as they are... but, this was relatively easy to set up.

In the box you'll get the flood light/camera, a pre-cut powercord, and an "S" hanger.

The pre-cut powercord is for setting up and configuring the camera inside (before any exterior installation). You can simply connect the power cable to the camera and then plug it in and wait for the device to boot. There are instructions, so please follow those... I'm just giving you a rundown of what to expect. If you haven't already downloaded the EUFY app on your phone/tablet, then you'll need to do that and set up an account.

Once you have all of the configurations in place, you're ready to mount the camera. NOTE: You will need a j-box to mount this camera. J-box = junction box (octagonal box is what I would recommend... but you can use a regular squared box). Make sure you seal it off from moisture and water so you don't have rain seeping in and rotting your sub-structure of your house. The "S" hook is to hold the device while you do the wires to your houses electrical. Make sure you seal the top and sides around your J-box too... but never seal the bottom. Reason? If water somehow does find a way, it will need a way to escape.

It isn't as hard as it seems but if you don't have any experience with electrical or construction, it might be a little intimidating. Watch some videos or get a friend or someone more experienced than you (if you need to, that is) to help out.

This is true. Even employees at Anker (sister company of Eufy) could be potentially predators and watching this stuff. You would have no idea, and the companies are going to do their best to keep doing this without you knowing by encrypting the traffic so no one knows they are sending your image. Do you trust every single employee at Anker and Eufy with access to this stuff to not be a predator or pedophile? Glad to see that the community is keeping people aware of the risks this device and all devices from ANKER and Eufy pose.

A small group of people are overreacting about this because of a youtuber. First they said it was a "major breach" and now steadily everyone is backpedaling and realizing no data was compromised.

So Eufy put up disclosures about push notifications for thumbnails and modified the way their web portal worked. For most of us that is enough. Especially for external monitoring. Most of us on slickdeals bought these to avoid the subscription fee and Eufy works great for that.
Yes, I too think they're overreacting about how each person detected by a camera has their own unique facial ID that remains the same on multiple different cameras/home. If you have nothing to hide, why do you care if a Chinese company has a scan of your face tied to an ID in their system?!

China is always trustworthy with our biometrics!

Can't comment on this specific deal, however, as an alternative one can check the FEIT deal at Costco right now for $79. This is comparable camera I think with SD local storage and no subscription fees. Hope this helps someone decide.

This is just the way life should run. Everyone looks out for each other. And there should be respectful different opinions in the community, that's what makes our society strong.

This was a better video that actually looked at how this works and debunked most of the security claims. It's why most people are now moving the goalposts to the marketing claims:

Unfortunately Linus's team misinterpreted information AGAIN and doubled down. I highly doubt Linus himself even watched this video.
1) In my video I talked about the images that Paul Moore reported on that are hosted on Amazon CloudFront. Those images cannot be brute forced and use x-amz-signatures which are not generated based on any serial number or predicable data. Linus conflated that issue with a completely separate report about RTMP video feed URLs, which I didn't speak about at all during my video because not enough information has been released for me to have an informed opinion.
2) The main reason I said it wasn't unexpected for Paul Moore to find images on the cached CDN after account deletion is because those images expire on their own after 24 hours and are in a temporary cache, and that we would only expect S3 bucket data to be effected by account deletion. I threw in the 30 day GDPR argument as an aside, but Linus clung to it instead of focusing on the main point.
3) Their main rebuttal was "Hey, we can't tell you who told us this, and we haven't confirmed it for ourselves, but some guy says he was able to do some other bad stuff". No information released, no redacted PoC, nothing. Hitchens's Razor says "That which can be asserted without evidence, can be dismissed without evidence."
4) They keep yelling about how none of the technical details matter because the real issue is that Eufy marketing lied about local control. In no way am I excusing the false advertising, but misrepresentation of technical facts ARE important. There's a big difference between a bad actor being able to pull up any video feed they want at any time vs. spending days to brute force a single image CDN URL. There's also a big difference between sending data to the cloud to provide a requested service vs sending data to the cloud to sell to a 3rd party.

There is also a crazy effort to convince people (like the user above me) that this is not a real issue. The level of shilling is insane, I had no idea Anker had such reach.

i thought he had some good points until 7:50 mark when he basically brushes off the claim about unencrypted video streams playable via VLC because he couldn't confirm any valid claims. i believe The Verge was able to independently verify that their camera feed was viewable via VLC player.

Personally I'm more concerned about Apple and Google that are tracking and that provide my personal data to my own government without a warrant.
And if you don't like "Chinese" companies, just remember who sent our jobs there, it's the boomer/greatest generation who sent the work overseas starting in the late 70's so they could make money off the cheap labor and the stock market.
So, dear boomers of the world, don't tell anyone younger who they shouldn't purchase from, you have done enough damage already.https://static.slickdealscdn.com/ima...lies/smile.gifhttps://static.slickdealscdn.com/ima...lies/smile.gif
I'm not arguing any of your points. They're just irrelevant to the topic at hand. Boomers didn't capture and tag biometric data from these cameras without permission and make it available to the Chinese Communist Government -- Eufy did.

But nice attempt at deflection.

This is for outdoor, what's the concern about security and such? Perhaps I'm missing out. So far I prefer Eufy than Wyze, Reolink, Arlo, Foscam and other non-brand cameras I have tried.
Issue is not where camera is mounted. During the setup you connect the camera to your wifi and allow them to access your cell phone. That is equalant to allowing Chinese PLA to spy on you.

The VLC was through the web portal. You needed the password and username to login. Without that, you're not getting anything.

Can it even be reproduced now that Eufy has made it so external players can't be used which I mentioned in post 8 of this thread?

even the verge has given mixed info about this topic:
Quote :
Not only has the verge walked back their claim that the RTMP stream was generated by motion events (now they are saying only by waking the camera with the sync button), but they say the method they used to obtain the RTMP address is no longer valid.

Pay attention to the "Weatherproof Junction Box Required" part. I've had to replace 2 lights due to the junction box allowing water in. Suggest using silicon caulk at connections if there is any doubt.
