Real talk I haven't deadlifted in years and have 700lbs of calibrated competition bumper plates and other equipment collecting dust in basement. I picked up marathon running over last few years and only weights now is kettlebells.

To all the home gym owners, big ups to staying disciplined. It gets difficult when you get older.
I lifted heavy through 2010 but couldn't keep it up due to work obligations. I retired 3 years ago and now use kettlebells, Step Mill, Rogers Hip Press, Hammer Strength V-Squat, Icarian Donkey Calf, Westside Reverse Hyper, and York GHD. At 60 I feel the machines are safer so I have accumulated the best used ones I can find at reasonable prices. I am helping my Dad through various ailments and noticed the legs go first. My advice is not to skip weight training the legs no matter what age you are!
It's easier to stay motivated if you're not always putting the heaviest amount of weight on as possible. I'm pushing 40 and am in best shape I've ever been. I finally figured out the key is to not get hurt lifting. Less weight but consistency.

I used to load up lifts and my form would eventually go to hell...then I'd visit snap city. 6 or 7 days off to recover then back at it. That's what kills motivation imo. Sometimes 6 days off turns into 2 weeks off, etc etc.

Stay healthy, lift a little less, be consistent.

And to all those who want to deadlift, be careful. this is one exercise you don't want to F around on. Really easy to hurt yourself. I DL once a week with light weight but good form. I always preferred a barbell.

This.

Consistency > everything else.

In my teens and 20s I would go HAM in the gym on a daily basis but would sleep like shit and wouldn't recover and see results, just beat myself up constantly.

Obviously, the reason I wasn't seeing results was because I simply wasn't working hard enough. Couldn't have been that I wasn't taking care of myself. /s

For people over 6'. I would take caution before buying this. Depending on how wide your stance is when squatting and deadlifting. the cheap bars with narrow handles can prove problematic.

Note: I love trap bar deadlifting but must be careful of my loading when using these cheaper bars due to a less optimal stance.

I tried a trap bar but ended up returning it and getting a 'rickshaw' style one from titan fitness. It's more money ($140) but worth it I think. Same de-stressign the lower back for heavy deadlifts (plus no roll), easier to load weights as the bars are off the floor, longer bars for adding more weight, more freedom of movement for doing farmers carries, can also be used for shrugs, bent over rows, assisted dips, etc.

Thinking about getting the rep fitness open trap bar. I figure if this type of bar is going to take this much space.. Gonna have it do more than just deadlifts

A routine like 5/3/1 Boring But Big (well known, popular) is very helpful.

You input your max lifts into a calculator, and the program gives you a prescription of lifts to do, at a reduced percentage. One step back, to make sure you can keep going forward for months.

Hex deadlifts is the easiest and safest to do. It's really meant for reps and nothing too heavy so even if rated to 1,000 lbs most you can put is 315s on bumpers or 405/495 no clips on iron plates maybe. Great price though.

I love this. I built my home gym last year. I am 51 (benched 340 lbs in March) and earlier this year, I did 133 straight days in a row working. I decided Jan 1st 2023, I would target 6 months in a row. I ended up starting early in November and today will be day 35 in a row. Now I am targeting 8 straight months. Like you said, it is all about discipline in getting in there the days you are sore, tired, or even sick. But I hurt less when I work out everyday than I did when I took 1-2 days off a week. Sitting around makes my joints hurt. Congrats on your marathons. That is also tough on the body!

I agree and people just need to exploit physics. Work is force (mass x acceleration) x Time. I lift heavy but have had to drop about 5-10% from what I was doing this summer to reduce risk of injury. So the secret is as mass decreases, time doing the rep increases. My overall work load is higher because my time increase is far greater than the 5-10% of weight I have dropped. It is far safer and will produce the same benefit, while ensuring far better form.

I bought a Hex bar that was on Slickdeals about 2 years ago. I got it a full year before I ever used it because I knew I was moving and building a home gym (it was moved in the original packaging). I absolutely love it and use it for deadlifts and sometimes shrugs. I think it is far safer than a bar. As others have said, you will only be able to get 3 large plates on either side (315 if using 45 lb bumperplates). For most people, myself included, this will be sufficient

I bought this a couple months ago on the last sale. It's pretty good! I've seen other trap bars that have a built in "kickstand" that keeps it level when changing weights so that might be a better option but this has been great for my needs. 52 years old, Greg Doucette laser eyes called me 13% bf so not too shabby, all natty too!

Anyway I use it for shrugs and decent deadlifts, nothing stupid at my age. It has been awesome to do shrugs for sure, and farmers walks around the garage…that's my favorite use…

If your looking for similar use than you should get what you need out of it I'd imagine…

I'm doubting the dimensions listed. For one, the description says its a 3lb item. Is the handle width really 20"?

Man, I couldn't agree more. I'm a 38 year old firefighter and dad of 3 with about 12 years lifting experience, and the last couple years of programming have been a lot more work in the 65-80% 1RM range with higher reps. My back and joints and tendons were really starting to bark at me after many years of pushing heavy weights in the 85-100% 1RM range and going after PRs. I'm feeling a lot better now overall myself!

That dude is a genetic freak and works his ass off, but the amount of gear he's on is off the charts. I can't imagine many people were surprised to see his lineup of steroids he uses. he probably goes to the same doctor as the rock.

Got one last time, but it was way too big to fit my phone to remove my SIM card.
