I know that one of the big features is the AI upscaling but wouldn't the upscaling in a good projector/TV be as good?
No, it's not.

Personally I replaced my Shield Pro with the new ATV 4K. Much smoother in operation and no advertisements on the home screen, works great with the Apple eco system/iPhone in general. Better overall streaming box in my opinion. The Shield Pro is laggy unfortunately.

Only feature I'm truly missing is the 4K upscaling feature. You can even use Steam Link and connect a controller easily to the ATV. If you truly need the more hardcore audio codecs, sideloading apps, watch a ton of 1080P content, or want to use it as a file server, the shield pro is likely the better option for you. If none of this matters to you, get the ATV 4K.
Weird I have the new apple and think I wasted my money on it. I keep going back to the Shield. The new Apple TV wasn't any faster/snappier/did not provide a better user experience to me than the 2021 did

I am still using a PS3 Slim to play 1080p mkv files over GigE.

I really like PS3's fast forwarding streaming video speeds at 1.5x, 10x, 30x, and 120x.

What are this box's fast forwarding speeds?

The Shield is no longer King, get over it.
Why give Nvidia your money for outdated tech? Deprogram yourself, and buy based on specs not on brand loyalty.
I have the 2015 version. Nvidia still supports my Shield Pro by providing frequent updates. Nvidia earned my loyalty. I'm going to be first in line and am willing to pay the list price if they come out with a 2023 version.

All Android boxes have ads, use a custom launcher.

Why would you run a game console through the Cube anyway?!? That's not what the HDMI port is for. This is how to get minimum lag 101.
I think it's for plugging in HDMI devices.

Quote from josephinelp :

USB2 is 480Mbps, more than 3x bandwidth than any UHD movies that exist. I can stream UHD Blu-rays on USB2 on devices slower than the 3rd gen Cube easy already.
In a vacuum yes you get up to 480Mbps (60MBps) over USB 2.0. But not all USB 3.x storage devices like stepping down to 2.0 and there's plenty of other scenarios for buffer issues. Lot's of evidence out there that UHD is not reliable over USB 2.0, also ruins any chance of future-proofing this device. On that note, it's actually quite impressive that the Shield made it this long with the hardware they chose. Trust me, nobody will be comparing this shit cube to brand new hardware 7 years from now. Hell, the Shield even has gigabit ethernet, while the cube is still only 100Mb, what a joke.

Quote from josephinelp :
Sideloading is a pain in the ass? FFS use send to tv, or any of the other half dozen apps that let you install apps remotely from a phone.
"Bro just get an app on your phone and then connect the two hardware devices via some apps software interface, def 0 risk of hassle"

No thanks, at very worst, I can type in an URL for an APK directly into the Shield and it installs.

Quote from josephinelp :
These are just a bunch of crap excuses for Shield owners to keep telling themselves that they have the best device.

It use to be the Shield is the fastest, now it's slower than the AppleTV, 3rd gen Cube and even the 2nd gen Cube because of the last buggy Shield Android update.
Don't need to tell myself anything, why are people like this? Are you Bezos nephew or something? It's a consumer device and I'm giving advice on pros and cons of all. I happen to believe it's King Shit of Turd Mountain, it has tons of flaws, but you don't know what you're talking about. The issues people are having is from updating from 8.x to 9.x. Not sure why and it didn't happen to me, but I'm not one of those, "wOrkS finE on mY maChinE bRo" types of people -- it's definitely a real problem. But if you buy a Shield with 9.x pre-installed, it's going to work fine. If you have laggy UI issues after upgrading, you can re-flash and it will work fine.

Quote from josephinelp :
Yeah the 3rd gen Cube has bugs now, it's NEW, not recycled hardware from 2015.
Right, USB 2.0 is from 2000... and that 100Mbps ethernet...

I'll also add, 3rd gen Cube has NO Audio passthrough for DTS, DTS HD-MA, DTS-X, Dolby TrueHD, & Atmos via Dolby TrueHD... major buzzkill if you want to play blu-ray rips on a decent home theater.

So again, for my use case and anyone else in the same boat I'd say Shield is probably still the best at playing high-fidelity content either on a local drive or somewhere on your local network. If you just want to stream from standard paid services like Amazon, Netflix, Hulu, Paramount+ etc. Amazon Fire devices are uglier and clunkier than Apple and still technically less capable than Shield, so I'd only recommend it for people who absolutely need YouTube HDR, but you could pick up a $30 Fire Stick for exclusively that purpose and then go with one of the others for everything else.

It's nVidia. If it doesn't start at $500, I will be shocked.
