Tom's Hardware Verdict

The Crucial X8's burst performance rivals even the highest-end USB 3.2 Gen 2 portable SSDs on the market, so it offers a lot of value for those in search of a high capacity SSD with cheaper QLC flash.

Pros

+ Low cost per GB
+ Competitive performance
+ Large write cache
+ Removable cable and USB-C to USB-A adapter included
+ Low heat output

Cons
- Slow write speed after write cache fills
- Lacks encryption support

Crucial's X8 writes fast, and the 2TB model comes with a moderately-sized 280GB SLC cache. After writing to the device for roughly four and a half minutes, write performance plummeted from 1,050MBps down to an average of 180MBps.

So because I write large files in large amounts, this https://slickdeals.net/f/16209196-4tb-crucial-mx500-3d-nand-2-5-sata-solid-state-drive-270-free-shipping?attrsrc=search%3Aterm%3Acrucial+mx500%7Csearch%3Apage%3A1%7Csearch%3Aposition%3A3%7Csearch%3Aresult_type%3Athread%7Csearch%3Aresult_id%3A16209196&src=SiteSearchV2Algo1
in an external enclosure might be better? About half as fast for short writes, but never drops below 400MBps even for loooong writes. That's my understanding anyway. Just depends on your needs.

Not a good price - it's $250 at Newegg

It is not sold by Newegg but rather a 3rd Party seller who ships from China. I would prefer to purchase from Amazon (or Best Buy who also has this drive at the same price). Thanks OP. Bought one.

Price dropped to $264.99 at both Amazon and Best Buy. BB also includes 3 months of Microsoft 365 (family or personal) as a sweetener.

I was just thinking through this exact trade off. Let me know if you get the sata drive. Curious as to your thoughts on it so far.

Went with a Crucial MX500 SATA drive at 2TB, about ($132 right now) to put into a $12 external enclosure. Decided I don't need 4TB. It's plenty fast for me and I can tranfer huge amounts of data with no slow-down.
