Any reason not to buy this for use as a backup drive?
In for one.
It is a great drive and you will be glad you have it.
Most professionals serious about digital asset management use a 3x or 5x strategy. (Larger and more involved for a multi employee business)
Main OS nvme ssd and a possible 2nd or third ssd for scratch discs (video editing)
The five simple (and it doesn't cost much in 2020+) backups are….
Internal PC HDD
2nd internal PC HDD
You NEVER want to use main OS nvme drives as cold storage for large files you rarely use. Google anandtech and you will see detailed articles outlining how ssds slow down as they fill up. Always separate your data.
These are just cold storage. And if your device is small, like a tablet or laptop you just use the remaining 3x
Off site HDD - friends house or safe deposit box
Encrypted cloud hosting (primarily for personal docs smaller in size - no need to backup your 4k HDR 12 bit 6 hour cat videos)
And one or more of these or anything similar - these sit on your desk or dresser on in a prepared escape pack. This storage acts as a fast "oh shx t" drive when the poop hits the fan and you or your family need to evacuate. And use these as the easiest transport method to other devices.
There are lots of variations of the above but there are the basics and should be considered a good starting point.
The number of friends I have had that have lost "Everything " - and I mean everything to water damage or fires or theft or old failing hardware is staggering.
Don't count on cellphones or Facebook or Instagram or Apple backup (although that's definitely one source to help).
Happy New Year!

I already have 2 2tbs and 1 4tb as my drives. I want this as a backup to the data one of them.
You can use this drive for backup but you can save money and just buy a regular portable 4tb wd/seagate hdd for like $80 bucks and use it as a cold storage backup. These ssd drives are smaller and they are faster than hdd so it makes sense if you plan to do a lot of data copying and traveling. Since there is no moving parts, it's less likely to break if you drop it.

yeah hoping to have it for convenience of not needing power supply and easily grabbing it
makes one more likely to do backups if its quicker
Yeah the portable hdd are power through the USB cable. You don't need to connect it to a power outlet.
I feel like someone had a Close Encounter and was just dropped off on the planet. I remember portable external hard drives requiring two USB ports and a Y-cable, but a power supply?

All of the new portable hdd do not require two usb port or a Y split cable. Just a single cable into a usb 3 port.. The usb 3.0 port is either Blue or has SS logo next to it.
