Loved this when I bought it...1 yr later, suddenly run time is 30-40 seconds...never abused, the battery doesn't last...many complaints about the battery in this...it's not really serviceable, but YouTube shows how to take it apart and replace the batteries...caution: must have soldering skills.

For whatever it's worth, I've had mine for 5 years and never had an issue with the battery. I've bought several others as gifts without issue. But I do agree the battery is the most vulnerable part

Bought this back in 2017 and it still runs like a champ without battery degradation. No hesitation buying again.

I had much the same experience with a similar B+D Pivot 20V hand vac we bought 5 years ago. Battery began to peter out after 1-1/2 years, such that you had maybe 30 seconds run time before it shut down.

The really frustrating part was how easy it was to access the battery pack (two Phillips head screws on a side plate), and the pack was wired in with fast-on connectors (spade lugs). So it was obviously designed to make a battery pack swap easy.

Only problem was that B+D didn't sell replacement battery packs! Like you're just supposed to pitch that big hunk of plastic in the landfill, and buy a new one! WTF!

I'm now a Shark hand vac fan, happy with one we've used regularly over 3 years, with no noticeable drop in run time or suction. As much as I like most other B+D (and PC) 20V-max tools, I'll never buy another B+D hand vac!

Which Shark are you using? I had two of these Black and Deckers. The battery completely died on one unit after two years or very light use and the remaining one runs for maybe 2 minutes.

Just went and checked, it's a Shark Pet Perfect II model SV780, but may be replaced by a newer model now, dunno.
It's great, and the little power brush gizmo was surprisingly useful for some upholstery cleaning as well.

I know you said you haven't had the need to replace the battery, but does Shark make replacement batteries? I couldn't tell from the description.

You can buy replacement 18V batteries for our Shark SV780 hand vac from a number of places; not sure if directly from Shark or not.
They're not cheap, for instance this one on Amazon is $30 [amazon.com]. Then again, we've not had a need after almost 4 years of usage.

Either way, I'd much rather go that route than toss the whole thing in the trash to be sent to the landfill!

I've had two shark hand vacs and both had bad battery problems.

Maybe some variations in manufacturing builds, perhaps? All I know is ours still works great, and we keep it docked in the charging base. Whereas, after two early deaths of B+D lithium hand vacs, I was ready to gamble on the Shark.

After reading a number of comments about B+D hand vacs (such as the one in this deal), the "trick" may be to *not* keep it docked in the charging base--only use it to charge it up, then remove the vac to store until the next use. The last word in convenience!
