After researching this problem, it came to light that my mistake (apart from the initial purchase) was that we always kept it plugged into the charger. Evidently this hand vac can last for years if you disconnect it from the charger after it's charged. Easy peasy, right?

Just got another one delivered today, which will still sit mounted on its charging base but will be on a timer / smart plug this time around. Hopefully it will last longer since it will not trickle charge constantly.
