Hard pass on the telescoping rods for me. Maybe for backpacking, but for every other use case I can imagine, I would prefer a traditional two piece or one piece rod. Abu Garcia is a good brand, and I would expect this to be a good price point for a newbie. Not that it's too hard to learn a baitcast, but I might also suggest going with a spin cast rod/reel combo if it's your first.
