It's a decent player and will play many non-US region blu-rays (but not all) without modification (unless there's been a recent firmware change that now disables it). Insert the disc. After it displays the region warning, press stop and then hit the top menu button twice (the first time it will give a "not supported" warning).

If you want the best sound and picture quality, 4k disc is the way to go.

My 10 year old son and I were streaming Rogue One the other day on Disney+. 4k with HDR. It looked great, but I told him I have the disc. Let's see if we can notice a difference.

I popped the disc in mid movie and we both felt the difference was obvious. The detail in the video was nicely improved. The sound was fuller and richer. The surround details were more distinct.

If you're a casual movie watcher who owns a low-end $500 TV then stick to streaming.

But for those of us who have a 5.1+ setup and a high end LED or OLED it is absolutely worth the money. 4k streaming is about the quality of a 1080p blu ray.

YMMV as I don't do many returns with Amazon, but the 2 times I hit them up on chat for a price match, they gave me a gift card for the difference. If you don't often hassle them, it's worth a shot. Worst they can say is no

Agreed that Amazon should price match. You might try asking them anyway. I've been given price adjustments at Amazon but they come in the form of a credit for future purchases rather than a refund to the credit card.

It's starts with the content & if it even has DV and how well each is transferred.

In basic terms for us to view any HDR content it has to be tone mapped.

With DV it's built in to transfer/metadata and can't be manipulated.

HDR10 is static HDR and has to be tone mapped(manipulated).

Depending how well the transfer is on DV vs the tone mapping of HDR will determine how much the difference is between the two.
This varies widely from disc to disc.

How HDR is tone mapped is what separates players.

How well your display processes all this metadata plays a role also.

I doubt Google will bother to try to compete with Dolby since there is already competition with HDR10+ & DTS:X and neither comes close with content.

FWIW If you have an Amex discount for using rewards points to pay they discount off the original price so I got $60 off my order at a 40% discount (max $60) I would assume Discover, Chase, Citi points work the same

100% agree. There's a lot of Dolby Vision content available but very little HDR10+ content. Any $20 cheaper.

Comparing the two this player outperforms the LG with all 3 disc formats minus DV.

Their Optimizer does such a good job tone mapping HDR10, many times the difference with DV is negotiable.

I had more disc issues with this player compared to Sony's.

I would gamble more with Sony than I would with this player, just remember you have to manually turn off/on DV with Sony.

What advantage does this have over using PS5 or Xbox Series X blu ray player? And what advantages do all of those have over typical 4k HDR streaming?

(other than potential resale value of purchased content)
