I do not think you would be surprised to learn that this is exactly how I operate Edge on my Samsung Galaxy chromebook (using the Linux client within the ChromeOS Linux sandbox). Fortunately, activating the Linux sandbox within ChromeOS is trivially easy [google.com] and installing Edge in x86 Linux isn't controlled by Microsoft in the way they're able to restrict Play ... [microsoftedgeinsider.com].

Partdon the pun if I cite Microsoft Edge as an edge case; another example that few might attempt would be Samsung's mobile browser. In both cases, I expect the developer is intentionally avoiding x86 devices (though Microsoft appears to have gone even further, limiting most everything that isn't clearly a phone).

Otherwise, I love to advocate for alternative browsers on ChromeOS as it is a long-term option for chromebooks past their support date but which won't be granted this feature through the current development path for ChromeOS which will eventually decouple the Chrome browser from the... [aboutchromebooks.com]. At the same time, I would recognize that the vast majority of chromebook users will stick to the Chrome browser or may consider a fully supported Android browser like Opera (which widely advertises support for chromebooks via the Android Play store [opera.com]). In the same way, very few developers seem to bother with restricting chromebooks as an option for their app in the Play store even though that is a lever they can indeed enable (as the Microsoft Edge example illustrates).

Thanks for creating an opportunity to discuss alternate browsers on ChromeOS and also note the less-than completely universal nature of Play store support. As tablets and even some phones have often experienced the latter, it doesn't always get a mention even though it is still part of Google's Play store experience (either blame Google for allowing the broken experience and not enforcing universal support, or blame a given developer for avoiding platforms as part of their strategy).

Good luck!

Picked up a couple black/White letter keyboard skins for $8.00 from Amazon for my C425's and am amazed how well they fit. Ya can't even tell it's a skin and it adds a nice rubberized feel to the keys. Completely solved the visibility issue.

Been waiting for this to drop in price again. Think I'll return the non-touchscreen I bought for $119 and get this instead.

Purchased the C433 and returned it after a few days. The Chrome-unboxed review talked about the flex in the keyboard and the hard to open lid and they were right on. The C434 is the 14" touchscreen model to get but I haven't seen a good price on it yet. I'm too lazy to use a touchscreen anyway so I picked up two C425'sSmilie

What would be some uses that would make the touchscreen variant worth the extra money? Thanks!

I'm not that picky when it comes to colors so I really didn't pay attention. It was the bendable keyboard that really turned me off to the C433 the most.

Does this have a glossy screen? I bought the non touchscreen version and the screen was not glossy. I returned it due to the screen not being glossy and having a slight yellow tint to it. The keyboard is also hard to read.

I have this and you will not find a better one for the price. Flex is not as much of a problem. My wife took over it and the only concern she had was the white letters on the keyboard but when I showed her how to change the brightness she is fine. She really likes that there is no fan.

If you plan to run Android apps, a touch screen is often required, since it can be tough to simulate the same interaction with a touchpad and keyboard.

If you're complaing about the visibility of the key markings, you can turn off the backliting entirely or increase the lighting of the keyboard with ALT + the dim or brighten keys. This fixed the problem to the satisfaction of a few people that commented on a previous SD thread or elsewhere. In my case, it was never a problem for me to begin at the well lit work desk, so I just turned off the backlight to save a bit on battery.

The C433 has a full metal chassis. It looks nicer than the C425 but is also heavier. The keyboard does have more give than the C425 surprisingly. Colors on the C433 is brighter and more vibrant.

That said, I don't see a huge reason to upgrade to the C433 if you have the C425. They perform similarly in terms of web browsing and running apps.

Bit even after the (earlier) deal was gone last week.

Spent 5 minutes with BB chat and got it price matched... thanks!
