Ladies and gents, this thread is about 16gb ram M1 mba. If 8gb M macbook satisfies your needs, good for you. You are more than welcome to feel strong about your opinion but that doesn't always mean it's true. I honestly don't even understand why ppl would come here and explain others how sufficient 8gb m1 macbook is. Ppl are here because this is a good deal. I don't think anyone would disagree that a 16gb ram macbook would go further than a 8gb macbook. This is not a cheap product and that's why we are all here. To buy good products at a good price that would hopefully last for a long time.

It does not matter, as efficient as the M chips are, that doesn't mean the apps you use are all optimized. If one app uses 4gb of ram then it uses 4gb of ram. And that's one app. Even if the apps uses only a few hundred, end of the day, 16gb allows more apps open and running simultaneously (especially background apps). I also speak from actual experience of owning a M1 Air 8GB. I figured 8gb should be fine on a Mac especially an M1 chip but nope. That thing got slow a lot and I'm not even a power user. Traded that in for the base model 14" pro with 16GB ram. Works so much better.

Thanks OP. For wife I Picked this up and Best buy MBP 14" M1pro 16/512 deal. Almost $500 difference, and 1tb in this deal. I'll offer wife either and return other... can't see her needing MBP for just interior design programs (sketchbook, CAD etc...). This Air should be able to handle that right?

Thanks again!

Those programs might be much better on the Pro, as they use the GPU for rendering, and the Pro has 2-4x better GPU performance.

Also the screen on the Pro is "much" better

Storage space is easily solved with an NVME drive/case

Thank you! I'll let her know. Hopefully won't be difficult to return if we go MBP. We migrated from NYC to FL this year... so I am familiar with B&H and would not be surprised with difficult return policy

Curious. Would this be faster and last longer than midnight m2 8gb 512gb?
16GB of RAM will run ~8-16GB of simultaneous apps faster than 8GB of RAM will. The M1 CPU is technically slower than M2 but this is a MacBook Air which has no active cooling so you'll hit thermal throttling in any situation where that minor CPU difference would otherwise matter anyway.

The M2 model is styled differently, has a MagSafe connector, and a stupid camera notch on the screen.

This or surface pro 9?
Chevy Camaro or RAM 1500?
Wine glass or Thermos?
Knee-high socks or a sombrero?

We're just picking different classes of product and posing it as a question, right? That's what we're doing, isn't it?

this. Amazing laptop for the price.
The touchscreen on this MacBook is way worse than the one on the Surface Pro 9. The detachable keyboard on this MacBook is also hard to reattach.

The Surface Pro 9 is notoriously bad at running MacOS though.

I've heard many times in these threads that the argument you put forth is just not true on the M architecture. It is true if you're talking about Intel chips. But the M architecture blows Intel away that 8GB is really like 16GB on Intel. It's that much better and 16GB on an M chip is really for like a fraction of people that edit videos, high end photos, etc. So anything else it's a waste of $.
The only people who say this are people who heard it from someone else and have no idea whatsoever what RAM actually is or how it works.

Do you have an external monitor? If so, then this is a great deal. No doubt about it. The only difference between this and m1 mbp is that the cpu throttles when the usage is high and it doesn't have a fan. So mbp runs smoother at peak and cooler.
Why would external monitor have any bearing on whether this is a good deal?

8GB in the new M architecture is efficient enough for 99% of the users out there, there has been plenty test videos on YouTube can attest to this.
don't put out false information if you don't own one
8GB is 8GB regardless of M1 or x86. How about you take your own advice about putting out false information.

For longevity reasons the 16GB investment is well worth it. Most computer consumption is not bound on CPU, it's the RAM limits that force computers replacement. Take my 2011 MacBook Air 11". It was great in 2011, super fast. Chrome became more and more bloated and now it barely even runs a tab. Buying the RAM now will probably double the lifespan for this laptop for most people.
I understand but this is Slickdeals, not pay something extra to double the ram for longivity hoping we'll need it some day.
as I pointed out majority of buyers wouldn't need the extra ram, is it nice to have, obviously, nobody is questioning that.
and to those who use for heavy work with 8GB that's not enough, you fall into that very minority group and shouldn't even bought 8GB to begin with.

Just got off of chat support and there is a 30 day return policy if you don't open it. I am guessing the confusion comes from the "Any computers built or modified by B&H to customer specifications". He verified with a supervisor that it isn't applicable.
