I wasnt even considering mac due to price.
Thanks
I'm a techie and understand the issues and technology- so I see both sides of the 8gb/16gb argument. Happy to share my thoughts if you want.
If you get this with the maximum memory available or even 16 instead of eight, it's future proof, it will last for 12 years when you change the battery and drive later on in a decade .
A PC will last 3 to 5 years even with upgrades, software and hardware but iMac will last 10 to 12 years with no upgrades at all then with a new drive or a new battery it'll last another 10 years but you cannot add memory later on a MacBook
Even if your argument was correct that you don't need more than 8 GB of memory today in 10 years you will so if you want this computer to last for 20 years, you get it with 16 gigs because it cannot be added later
The waste of money is a PC that will be garbage in five years no matter how much money you spend on it
But to get Mac, with only eight gigs of ram is also stupid
QUIET AS A MOUSE.
They are a marketing (bullshitting) company first and foremost and then a product company. That being said their products suck less than 15 years ago. Still their main goal is to extract as much money from you as you are willing to pay.

Now Apple very cleverly masks the issue by using very fast storage drives, so from a practical perspective, you could easily double the workload before you perceive a noticeable slowdown.
Now this will reduce the life of your drive, and memory requirements only go up over time.
To conclude- you can easily get by with 8GB for normal workloads. But 16 GB is definitely better and will avoid future issues
If you're sensitive to PWM these will screw your vision up after a a few hours
I had to return one even though I liked it/
My vision was still blurry a couple hours after use

Edit looks like just space gray is out, gold still active
The good news is that MBA 2s don't have PWM

You mention getting by with 8 GB for normal workloads. I would primarily use the MacBook for: Zoom calls; Microsoft Word; web-browsing; Maybe Netflix. Would these things be considered "normal workload"?
