Is Atmos a big significant feature on this?
Feels like I am spending too much money for a 5.1 sound bar in master bedroom.
If you want 5.1 surround sound then this setup is consistently listed as the best sound for the money in the $200 - 500 price range from my research and according to RTINGS. You could probably get a better 3.1 or definitely 3.0 for this price.

Dolby Atmos is being supported by more and more streaming services and should provide a better quality of sound then their base audio formats. But this setup is not going to be able to give you the full effect compared to like $1000 speaker systems and depends on the dimensions and setup of the room. If you do not care about the upfiring speakers (virtualized Atmos) and are fine with a smaller subwoofer you could also get the M51ax-J6 for around $300.

My living room has high, angled ceilings so I would think the Atmos effect would be lost. Anyone have a similar setup and two cents?

I have this in my bedroom and it performs great. I've hesitated to upgrade the firmware, as there are many people reporting the subwoofer not connecting after the upgrade. I guess should do it since I still have to mid January to return if needed.
I got this in November and used it in my bedroom. I really enjoyed it so far, particularly watching movies.

I have upgraded to newest firmware and never experienced any subwoofer disconnecting issue. However, I started to notice something else weird. My setup is to connect this sound bar to TV via HDMI ARC directly. Everything else are connected to TV and have audio passthrough to this sound bar. If I switched TV sources a few times between different sources, the sound bar audio started to chopping or cutoff every few seconds. First I thought I may had bad tracks on Blu-ray or 4K UHD discs. Then it also occurred on some discs which are perfectly fine on previous play. Not sure if this is TV passing audio to sound bar issue or just sound bar itself issue. The issue goes away by just powering off/powering on sound bar again. So I am thinking this is likely sound bar issue. But other than that, great sound bar for bedroom environment. Only sad part is very hard to find movie with great Dolby Atmos sounds to enjoy. In other words, it's hard to get the difference between 5.1 and 5.1.2 for movie viewing. I bought Edge of Tomorrow 4K UHD, and played 4K disc in Dolby Atmos (5.1.2) from Xbox Series X and Blu-ray disc from Blu-ray player in Dolby True-HD audio (5.1) side-by-side. The troop in air plane before dropping to beach scenes sounded better and had more immersed feeling with 4K in Dolby atmos. But for most other part of movie, there are no much difference between 5.1 and 5.1.2. Streaming Dune in 4K Dolby atoms from HBO Max is also pretty good but not overwhelming, maybe it's because heavily compressed audio due to streaming limitation.

I have this system in my Master Bedroom. The Bedroom is 14 x 16" with an opening to the en-suite. It has mini vaulted ceilings, approximately 10.5 feet high at the peak. The soundbar and TV are up against the wall and I'd say the up-firing speakers are bouncing sound at the ceiling at around 8 feet of the arc to the top height. Our Headboard is on the opposite wall.

I had the Visio M51A-H6 last year before the Power supply died in the Soundbar. It was 5.1 with no Atmos up firing speakers. (it had faux software originated Atmos) I replaced it four months ago with this Visio M512A-H6. it is a significant improvement over the 5.1 setup. Definitely some overhead sound envelopment, nothing dramatic.

From RTINGS:

The Vizio M Series M512a-H6 is better than the JBL Bar 5.1 Surround. The Vizio comes with discrete satellite speakers and has better soundstage and surround performances. Unlike the JBL, it also supports Dolby Atmos content. That said, the JBL is better built with more wireless playback options.

I'm wary of Vizio quality. I bought JBL from Costco so I have good return policy. I'm using for my bedroom so I don't watch alot of movie in there.

Nakamichi 9.2.4 is what I used for my home theater.
