2. Glass Onion Knives out is not the same movie. It's technically a sequel but no relation to the first movie. Different cast and story.
As a Southerner, I find myself doing this often. Not playing a bumpkin, but my accent greatly increases in certain company or situations where a folksy Southern drawl is ingratiating, and almost completely disappears in other settings.
I thought he did phenomenal job. So did my wife, who's also of Southern lineage.
We must agree to disagree. The character is not "toned down". He's eccentric and flamboyant. He's a character! Subtlety would not serve the role. And he sure as Hell isn't sloppy or un-sure. He's fashionable, precise, and quite confident. That's what makes him entertaining.
Now, that's not to say you have to find it entertaining, or that you're wrong for not liking it. Nothing is for everyone, and that's fine. But changing the character into something else entirely would just be silly. You don't need to make him like Columbo. Columbo already exists! If that's what you want, go watch Peter Faulk.
